Biography (English)
Laurence Traiger was born in New York in 1956. In 1965 he received his first violin lessons. At fourteen he received lessons in harmony, counterpoint and composition with William Cosgriff.
In 1974 Laurence Traiger received a scholarship from the University of Kansas, where he studied composition with Prof. John Pozdro until 1976.
In 1976 he moved his studies to the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He graduated in 1980 from Prof. Cesar Bresgen with a diploma and a grade of “very good”. During this time, he received grants from the Federal Ministry of Art and Research and the State Government of Salzburg.
1980-82 Laurence Traiger studied composition with Prof. Ivo Malec and analysis with Prof. Jacques Casteredes at the Conservatoire National in Paris.
From 1982-84 he was at Wilhelm Killmayer's advanced training class at the University of Music and Theater in Munich. In 1984 he was admitted to the master class by passing the "Exam".
His extensive catalog of works includes chamber music, choral music, orchestral music and film music as well as compositions for historical instruments and educational works. Laurence Traiger has received commissions from renowned ensembles and radio choirs.
His works have been performed in international festivals and concert series.
He received composition awards in competitions organized by ORF, the Bärenreiter Verlag and in the international competition for choral music in the city of Spittal / Drau. Works by him have been published by Doblinger Verlag, Bärenreiter Verlag, Ricordi Verlag, Edition Helbling and by the composer.
Laurence Traiger is a professor at the University of Music and Theater in Munich and a lecturer at the Mozarteum University.
Laurence and Franziska Traiger (married since 1992) live in Munich. They have three children (Leora 1996, Emanuel 1999, Mira 2004).
