My Classroom
About My Classroom
My portfolio will showcase the two elementary schools where I have worked in the past three years, Power Center Academy Elementary School and most currently Beacon College Prep. My experience at Power Center Academy was fully in-person from 2018 - March 2020. PCA then transitioned to virtual learning due to COVID-19. My experience at Beacon College Prep has been fully virtual. We teach from 8am – 3:30 online via the Zoom platform. Students submit their work via Seesaw and pick up hard copy packets of work every two weeks.
Both of these schools are located in Memphis, Tennessee. Power Center Academy is located in the Hickory Hill community in South Memphis and Beacon College Prep is located in the Raleigh neighborhood in North Memphis. Both are inner-city charter schools within the Shelby County School District with varying demographics.
The student population at Beacon College Prep is approximately 46% Latino and 54% Black. In my first grade classroom I have 11 Latino students and 13 Black students. Two of my first graders are SPED students and approximately 3-5 students are ELL. We are fortunate to have a 1:1 technology ratio within our building which immensely helps students learn virtually. There is currently no academic record or school report card for Beacon College Prep because the 2020-2021 school year is the founding year. Here is the school’s webpage: https://www.beaconcollegeprep.org/.
Below I have attached Power Center Academy's School Report Card. Power Center Academy Elementary School is located in South Memphis and has approximately 800 students in grades K-5. It is part of a larger community of schools called Gestalt Community Schools. The student population is approximately 97% Black, 2% Latino and a little less than 1% of other races. It is a Title 1 school with all of the students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. You can find more information about PCA on their website, http://www.gestaltcs.org/power-center-elementary/.
