At university, I studied Maths as part of my degree. We often engaged in practical tasks that children in schools would partake in.
One example of this was the 'Blob Tree'. This was used to signify where each of felt we were, in relation to how confident we were in Maths.
If you had coloured yourself in at the top, for example, you were extremely confident and had no worries in this area. If you coloured yourself in at the bottom, or falling off, you lacked in confidence and found Maths to be scary and daunting.
All of these experiences have helped me to empathise with my students and how they might be feeling about Maths. It's helped me to tailor learnign and experiences not only to their abilities, but also to where they are 'on the Blob Tree'. As children gain in experience and confidence, we then begin to solve more complex problems and the fun increases too!
I have a range of practical resources (including blocks, dienes and counting objects) and I'm always acquiring new and wonderful resources to help children in Maths. Having a physical resource can help build not only skill and ability, but also confidence. Children won't always need to use these but when they are learning a new concept or topic in Maths, it is so important- whatever the age of your child!
This wonderful resource, used in the picture, has helped many of my students to improve their ability to understand and solve simple addition and subtraction problems.
Many children lack a secure understanding of their number bonds to 10 and 20 and this is where resources such as these can be so important to use.
Often children have Maths homework that they don't quite understand how to do.
That's where I come in!
I have helped students with their homework by teaching them strategies to apply themselves, eventually completing them independently without my help!
If your child is struggling in Maths or you simply want them to stay ahead, please contact me and I can help. I can provide engaging learning activities that will improve your child's ability to reason and solve Maths problems as well as nurturing their love for Maths.
One of the biggest hurdles to being successful in Maths, is limiting beliefs. I will help your child to believe in themselves, to stay calm and focused when working out Maths problems and to build their resilience.
With new methods and techniques taught and practised regularly, your child will learn to embrace their mistakes and enjoy solving problems in Maths.
What I love about Maths is that there's always more than one method to solve a problem and that means that there's a method that WILL work for your child. Message me today for more information.
