VISIT AUCKLAND

New Zealand is one of the world’s most safe, friendly and beautiful countries

New Zealand is a small country, similar in size to Great Britain or Japan. Today, of the 4.4 million New Zealanders (informally known as Kiwis), approximately 69% are of European descent, 14.6% are indigenous Māori, 9.2% Asian and 6.9% non-Māori Pacific Islanders.

Māori were the first to arrive in New Zealand, journeying in canoes from Hawaiki about 1,000 years ago. A Dutchman, Abel Tasman, was the first European to sight the country but it was the British who made New Zealand part of their empire.

In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, an agreement between the British Crown and Maori. It established British law in New Zealand and is considered New Zealand’s founding document and an important part of the country's history.

You'll find amazing Māori historic sites and taonga (treasures) - as well as beautiful colonial-era buildings - dotted throughout the country. A walk around any New Zealand city today shows what a culturally diverse and fascinating country New Zealand has become.

Auckland is the biggest city in New Zealand with a population of 1.5 million, and is situated on a beautiful harbour, with a buzzing waterfront dining and shopping precinct.

You fly into Auckland international airport. (If you would like to be met at the Airport, we can arrange a friendly Lasallian to meet you and bring you to the Hotel.)

Visas: 56 countries do not need visas to enter New Zealand. If you do need a visa, you can get one for up to a three month visit. To check and see if you need a visa, look online at: immigration.govt.nz

The weather in July is winter. Expect temperatures to range from 1.5 celsius to 15.5 celsius (35-50F). Expect rain, but not snow.

The currency is NZ dollars and can be obtained at the airport, your hotel or banks. ATMs (cash machines) are readily available.

The Crowne Plaza Hotel, our conference venue, is situated in the middle of the city centre. Rooms can be single or twin share, depending on your budget. All your meals will be provided during the Conference. The Hotel has a fitness centre, wifi (you will be charged for wifi use by the Hotel) and can accommodate guests with special needs (wheelchairs, vision impaired and hearing impaired).

If you are arriving before Sunday 16th, or staying after the Symposium has ended, you will need to make your own arrangements for accommodation and transport.
