Week 5's presentation was on
Major theories of learning and teaching of basic school mathematics in inclusive classrooms
b)Cognitivism
REFLECTIONS
The idea that we form mental “schemas” and then add new information to those structures makes a lot of sense. When we learned something new, like solving word problems, the teacher would connect it to previous concepts we had already learned, like simple addition or multiplication. This makes the new information feel less intimidating and more like something I could build on.
TAKEAWAYS
When introducing a new topic, I will first assess what students already know and connect the new material to those prior experiences. For instance, before introducing fractions, I could revisit basic concepts of division and ratios, helping students see the connection and build a more comprehensive understanding of fractions.
