A smoothly functioning classroom is a prerequisite to good instruction and high levels of student engagement. Teachers establish and monitor routines and procedures for the smooth operation of the classroom and the efficient use of time. Hallmarks of a well-managed classroom are that instructional groups are used effectively, non-instructional tasks are completed efficiently, and transitions between activities and management of materials and supplies are skillfully done in order to maintain momentum and maximize instructional time. The establishment of efficient routines, and teaching students to employ them, may be inferred from the sense that the class “runs itself.”

Literacy Practicum Intern Activities Checklist: This checklist lists several procedures that I did in my literacy practicum; including procedures for small groups and whole class, leading students in the hallway, and praising positive behaviors. These routines and procedures helped my class time to run more smoothly and for the students to get the most out of the learning. My class time is used efficiently and skillfully to promote maximum instruction time. In this practicum we used instructional groups to help the students learn most effectively and efficiently. This helped me give individualized instruction to my students and help them with their needs.
Observation from Senior Practicum: In this lesson I smoothly managed procedures in my lesson by having students move to different locations during my lesson including to the carpet, desks, and outside for part of the lesson. This helped engage students in the lessons by giving them an opportunity to move around while still participating in the learning. Attached is my lesson plan and assessments from the students that helped me gauge their progress. These procedures helped the lesson run smoothly and maximize instruction time.
