As the crescent moon signals the arrival of Ramadan, the Bangsamoro people prepare to meet the sacred month of fasting, reflection, and devotion. It is a time when spiritual renewal takes precedence over anything else in this world. However, amidst these religious obligations, life continues, students still attend school, workers fulfill their duties, and families manage their daily responsibilities. In the context of the Bangsamoro people, where faith and governance meet, the question arises, how do individuals balance the demands of life while still being able to fully observe the holiness of Ramadan?
When we look at history, the Bangsamoro people, specifically the Muslims that live within BARMM, have thrived despite struggles as they were guided by faith and communal solidarity. Ramadan, which is beyond being a personal spiritual journey, is a collective experience deeply embedded in BARMM’s socio-political landscape. The government, institutions, and local communities make conscious efforts to accommodate the fasting month, ensuring that daily life remains manageable while upholding religious obligations.
As they recognize the significance of Ramadan, BARMM’s government implements policies that ease work-related pressures. Flexible working hours and shorter shifts are observed in many offices to allow employees ample time for worship and iftar (breaking of the fast).
For many Bangsamoro professionals, time management is the key. Productivity during the fasting hours relies on balancing workload and energy conservation. Prioritization of tasks, strategic rest periods, and maintaining a steady spiritual routine help employees remain efficient while honoring the fast.
Additionally, intention is also a key factor. Setting the intention to pray or being productive is one of the factors that helps in making sure the individuals remain committed to doing their tasks whether it be in terms of faith or in terms of practical work, and this helps them in a psychological way to maintain a steady spiritual routine.
Muslim students in BARMM face a unique challenge during Ramadan as studying while fasting requires both discipline and adaptability. Schools and universities often modify their class schedules through incorporating more breaks to allow students to rest and recharge. Teachers are aware of the challenges, and they employ more interactive and discussion-based lessons to accommodate the lower energy levels among students.
For many individuals, the key to balancing academics and fasting is mindful scheduling. Many students in BARMM prefer to engage in intense studying after Taraweeh (night prayers during Ramadan) or during Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) as they maximize on moments when the mind is alert. The practice of ‘Ibadah-based learning” which means integrating Islamic teachings into educational routines, also allows students to merge their religious devotion with academic growth.
In addition, maintaining physical activity without tiring oneself is important. An individual can do light exercises, such as walking or stretching before iftar, as it helps in keeping the body active without draining energy. Ensuring a balanced approach to health would allow fasting individuals to maintain their strength while fully engaging in spiritual practices.
Nevertheless, one of the most beautiful aspects of Ramadan in BARMM that would surely help in inspiring the people to persevere is the emphasis on community. As you walk around the community, with the lights decorated all throughout the houses, families gather for iftar, strengthening familial bonds. Masjids and community centers serve as hubs for spiritual enrichment and charity work, reinforcing the Bangsamoro values of brotherhood and collective responsibility.
While balancing daily life with the spiritual demands of Ramadan can be challenging, the Bangsamoro people view it as an opportunity for growth. It is a month of self-discipline, strengthened faith, and renewed dedication to personal and communal well-being.
In the end, balancing life during Ramadan in BARMM is not merely about managing schedules or adjusting workloads. It is about embracing the holistic nature of Islam, where devotion, work, education, and well-being seamlessly come together in a symphony of faith and purpose.
Ramadan Mubarak to the Bangsamoro people and to all observing this blessed month!
