Synthesis of Antiviral Nucleoside Mimics

Viruses use polymerases to replicate their genomes. Because polymerases are designed to process nucleosides and nucleotides, mimics of these structures have great potential as antiviral agents. For example, the recently-approved anti-Covid drug remdesivir is a nucleotide mimic. The Langenhan Laboratory is working to synthesize a novel class of nucleoside mimics and to test their activity against viruses.
