Replay operating for a MTSU vs. Murray State football game on ESPN+ was my first paid job in live production. Ever since that moment in 2023, I've been hooked.
During May, I had the opportunity to operate the Dreamcatcher replay system for the first time during a Nashville Soccer Club match!
Operating this replay system introduced me to a new workflow and I became increasingly confident throughout the match. The experience highlighted how exciting it is to work in-house for a production, something I had never done before.
I'm grateful to NSC for this opportunity and excited to continue developing my skills in sports broadcasting. Looking forward to contributing to more soccer coverage hopefully soon!
After graduating, I was invited to work the MTSU broadcast for CUSA's Track and Field Championship as replay producer.
I was fortunate to lead my replay team through three days of track and field coverage, including coordinating and building packages for field events, selling live-looks, and facilitating proper communication between my team and the others in the truck.
During this event, I dove deeper into AVID's Playmaker system. Days before, I had shadowed as a replay operator at the Nashville Soccer Club, and was able to translate the tips and tricks from their Evertz Dreamcatchers into our AVID Playmakers. After that experience, NSC added me to their registry of freelance replay operators.
I also taught my two replay operators about proper techniques and workflows. They collaborated with the director to ensure that the designated inputs were accurate for each event and day of the shoot.
Julia Rutledge (left) and Maddie Phillips (right) did a fantastic job as the replay operators for the Track and Field Championships.
I ran replay with Senna Dufour from 2023-2024.
As a replay operator for MTSU Media Arts Production, I supported live sports broadcasts across multiple sports including football, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Working in fast-paced live production environments, I was responsible for capturing key moments and providing instant replay footage that enhanced viewer experience and supported officiating decisions.
One of the highlights of this role was operating replay during the Nashville/Midsouth Regional Emmys, where I was responsible for a huge chunk of the show. This experience exposed me to high-stakes live television production and the technical excellence required for award-caliber programming.
Beyond technical operation, I took on a mentorship role by training other students on replay equipment and protocols. Teaching reinforced my own technical knowledge while developing my ability to communicate clearly and effectively. I helped establish training standards that ensured consistent quality across different student operators and sporting events.
This position taught me the importance of anticipation and quick decision-making in live television. Whether capturing a game-winning touchdown or a crucial tennis match point, I learned to read the action and deliver replay content that told the story of each athletic moment. The role strengthened my technical skills while building my confidence in high-pressure broadcast situations.
