DONATION FOR THE GREEN ENVIRONMENT DEVELOPMENT

University of Vavuniya is newly established by August 2021 as 17th university in Sri Lanka. We are the 1st proposed ‘Arboretum University’ in Sri Lanka as we work toward to develop the landscaping environment to support green infrastructure to evolve students and staff by connecting teaching and learning with nature.

Regarding the current economic situation of Sri Lanka, we could not implement proposed landscape activities with the maintenance of a green environment since the fund allocation for landscaping and maintenance activities given to the University of Vavuniya by GOSL is inadequate to startup landscaping activities and to maintain the green environment of the university premises. Further, it is required to provide the green infrastructure facilities (ex- Gardening, Irrigation facilities, stone benches, green house, etc.) and landscaping tools, machineries & equipment and adequate labour force to achieve our target of making the University of Vavuniya as an ‘Arboretum university’ in the years to come. 

There are number of ways to acquire the planting materials, gardening equipment & tools and sustain the green environment of the university premises. Individuals, Government organizations and other private organizations are ready to provide the plant saplings to implement the plantations without maintenance after the plantation. We have stock of the plant saplings (by donation and propagation) at the net house and waiting for the rainy season to initiate the plantation to minimize the maintenance activities (Mainly watering). Currently we are facing difficulties to water the newly planted trees with the lack of water source outlet and the lack of existing landscape laborers and machineries.

Hence it is proposed to search for donations of planting materials, gardening tools & equipment, fertilizers and to raise funds from the university staff, students, other well-wishers and private organizations (National & International) to compensate for inadequate fund allocation given by the government for such purposes.

The 10th council meeting held on 30th July 2022 approved for the fund-raising activity to develop the green environment and landscaping of the university of Vavuniya.

A committee consisting of vice-chancellor, Dean/ Faculty of Applied Science, Registrar, Bursar and curator (Landscape) will monitor the fund and decide on utilization of such funds donated for general landscaping activities.
