Shaking Studies

Taiwan’s unique geological setting and recent extreme events make it an ideal location to host the workshop. The April 2024 M7.3 Hualien earthquake and subsequent Typhoon Gaemi, which delivered over 1900 mm of rainfall in just two days, triggered significant terrestrial and subaquatic landslides and rapid sediment transport from Taiwan’s mountainous regions, at elevations of +2,500 m, to the ocean floor at depths of -5,000 m. All occurring within a horizontal distance of less than 100 km, these events serve as a natural laboratory to observe and study active sediment generation, transport, and deposition processes in real-time. Hosting the conference in Taiwan will provide an opportunity to engage with these dynamic processes in person, while discussing how to best advance scientific understanding of earthquake-related geohazards at active plate boundaries using sedimentary records.
Taiwan’s scientific community is highly active and known for its strong collaborative spirit, enhancing the potential for fruitful exchanges and joint research efforts. The cutting-edge infrastructure, including the state-of-the-art core scanning facility and emerging digital-twin core repository at National Taiwan University (NTU), is well-equipped to support both domestic and international scientific initiatives. Bringing the international community together in Taipei will therefore foster the development of forward-thinking scientific drilling proposals and promote multidisciplinary studies of geohazards in action.
Accommodation for field-based workshop activities for 22nd-23rd October will be included in the registration fee. The evening of October 22nd will be at the OHotel in Taichung, and the 23rd will be at Sha LiShian Villa Hot Spring Hotel.
Accommodation in Taipei for 20th, 21st and 24th are not covered in the registration fee, and need to be booked by participants. Our recommended hotel is The Howard Civil Service International House Hotel, located <10 min walk from the workshop venue at NTU. If you would like to take advantage of the university-negotiated rate, please indicate your preference in the application form.
