My academic journey from Hong Kong to Brazil
About me
Hi everyone, I'm Andy (林樹謙). Born and raised in Hong Kong, I moved to Brazil in 2023 to pursue my dream of becoming an ichthyologist. Over the past two years, I have been working on the taxonomy of Corydoradinae, one of the most diverse catfish groups. Ultimately, I am equally interested in understanding evolutionary relationships of catfish around the globe, which ends up to be part of my PhD project that I will be pouring my heart into over the next four years. I find scientic outreach as equally important as research, because that's how people get to know what we are doing. Outside my research, I like to spend my time giving talks on catfish and conservation as well as writing article to document every step of the way throughout my journey here in Brazil.
Amazon and I
I have always been drawn to the pristine wilderness of the Amazon River – the complete opposite of the concrete jungle of Hong Kong. It is perhaps for that reason that I have always wanted to step onto the Amazonian soil for as long as I can remember. I had this dream of venturing into the rainforest and exploring its major rivers to find rare fish that one only hears of in aquarium encyclopedias. What I thought would only stay as a childhood dream ends up becoming something I will be pouring my heart into in my mid-20s, something worth leaving my hometown to pursue. This website is more than just a catalogue of my research, it is where I share my deepest passion for what I'm doing.
