Liua le Vai o Sina Watershed & Rainforest Sanctuary Project
Lalotalie ECAT Ventures is proud to be working with the Falease’ela Environment Protection Society (FEPS) on our village conservation project Liua le Vai o Sina Watershed and Rainforest Ridge to Reef Project made possible with funding from overseas funding organisations. Tuiafutea Olsen is a founding member of FEPS and has taken on the role of Project Manager.
This main aim of our conservation projects is to protect and conserve one of the priority watersheds of South Upolu, its river system, waterfalls and rainforests for the benefit of the environment and people. We are working on the restoration of the rainforest-mountain area, the Liua le Vai o Sina River, the wetland/mangroves and have established a marine reserve in Auvae o Sina Bay.
The project relies heavily on community involvement to plant over 40,000 native seedlings provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources Water Resource Division (WRD) in the catchment area and buffer zone of the river, restore the mangroves and expand and maintain the marine reserve. Other activities include community awareness workshops, the establishment a sanctuary for the Manumea and otehr endemic birds of Samoa and training of eco tour guides.
The Falease’ela Environment Protection Society believes that these projects result in developing pride in the richness of Falease’ela’s Biodiversity and natural resources from freshwater to rainforest.
FEPS was set up in 2007. Its main focus is the conservation and protection of the natural and cultural heritage of Falease’ela for the benefit of the local community and its future generations.
