In our Sep 2017 community meeting the participants voted to move forward with upgrading the neighborhood entrance. The effort lapsed for quite a while but resumed in Aug 2019 with formation of a group of volunteers who were willing to spend time on this project, and with the hope of being completed October 2019. We made good progress but were impeded by weather and some unexpected obstacles. As of December 2020 we regard the project complete.
The brick pillars received a white paint wash.
A new fence of 4x4 vertical posts and 2x4 cross-pieces of untreated cedar was installed by a contractor on the former footprint. Unfortunately, we had not considered the "good side/back side" aspect of most fences. Street-side boards a cap rail were added later to give a good appearance from both sides. At this time there is no intention to stain or seal the fence since cedar weathers naturally and the gray wood blends with the white-washed pillars.
The "Lakeshore Heights" plaque on the main column will remain as our sign for now. It has better contrast since the pillars were painted and will be further polished. We acknowledge distinctly mixed opinions on whether the neighborhood needs a larger sign. Since that can be done later and is very expensive we are choosing to defer it for now.
A new LED street light has been added to the second power pole which brightens the area nicely, and the original light at the intersection has been replaced to match.
Loropetalum have been added past the end of the fence southward to transition from hardscape to a natural barrier.
Old shrubbery have been removed and new planted in Fall 2020 in front of the fence. (Thanks to Gwen & Shawn Sanders for leading this effort!)
