Sight-Reading and Literacy Assignments

Sight-reading will be assigned to each student every other week. The assignment will be posted on Monday and will be due that Friday. Each assignment is worth completion points, however, you will be "leveled" based on your ability in the assignment. Your level may change with each assignment so please check the spreadsheet for the most up-to-date level!

Each quarter you will have a sight-reading assignment that is GRADED for pitch and rhythm accuracy.

To access the assignments please follow these instructions!

1. Download the app “Sight Reading Factory” from your app store. It’s FREE!
   1. If you do not have access to this, no big deal! www.sightreadingfactory.com has everything you need.
2. Through this app, you can practice sight-reading at different levels.
3. You will be given regular sight-reading assignments that are assigned on Monday and due at the end of the week. Please make sure that you have registered with the class code which will be available in the Google Classroom and in the choir room.
4. In the assignment you are able to select your level and instrument. Always choose your voice part or “choir unison.” DO NOT SELECT RHYTHM-ONLY. For your level, please be sure to refer to your level posted in the classroom and also on this site. The assignment will allow you unlimited tries until you press submit. Each time you try, you will receive a NEW sight-reading example.
5. Points will be deducted if you do not read the correct level.
6. Make sure you listen before you submit so you are pleased with your recording.
7. Before you record, make sure your headphones and volume are working.
8. The assignment will NOT give you the pitch. You will need to use the “play opening pitch” button at the top.
9. The assignment will give you 30 seconds to test sing through the example without recording. The metronome will count off a measure of rest then the exercise will begin.
10. If it is set up to have a cursor keep the beat for you, use that to guide your singing so you stay with the beat.
11. Assignments will not be accepted for credit after a week beyond the due date.

Remember, for each sight-reading assessment, you are responsible for checking out your sight-reading level on here. If you successfully read above your level, you will be awarded extra credit. If you choose to read below your level, you will lose points.

Each choir student will be required to complete lessons in music literacy using the website www.musictheory.net. These lessons will be discussed in class but the levels may be completed at any time if the student wish to advance ahead of where their classmates are. The lessons are paired with drill activities that will test recognition and speed. There is no reason a student should not receive a 100% as you may make as many attempts as you’d like.
