Project Description:
In our society, social media is highly used by adults and even young teenagers. For this project, I investigated about the impact of social media on myself and the society.
After taking the “AM I ADDICTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA?” QUIZ", I reflected on myself and my usage of social media.
The results stated "You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?"
I agree with the results because I do spend a lot of my time on social media. According to my phone's history, I used "5 hrs and 13 minutes last week" on social media. High usage of social media can impact me and my education badly. For example, I always check my social media whenever I'm about to do work, this gets distracting and I start procrastinating. So, I need to rethink about my usage.
A statistic I found the most interesting evaluated how teens feel about their social media. It shows that for most teens, its hard to give up social media. Only 20% feel that they can leave social media easily. This statistic proves that social media addiction is real. In my opinion, social media addictions can be harmful because it can lead to distractions when doing work and can cause low interest in any other activity other than social media. This can impact teen's education negatively. I can relate to this because I often procrastinate while doing school work because of social media. To recapitulate, many teens are addicted to social media which can have negative impacts on them.
Social Media's impact on our society:
Social media can have negative and positive impacts. It can be negative because it often gives fake news, it can become addictive, and it can lead to anxiety and depression. Cyberbullying often takes place on social media, the bullying can result in depression and suicidal thoughts. Furthermore, social media can also be positive because it opens up more opportunities for you to make new friends and communicate with different people. To recapitulate, I believe that social media provides entertainment and it brings positivity however, you do need to be very careful.
Lessons Learned:
I learned that I spend a lot of time on social media and it an impact my mental health negatively. I also learned about how the people in my society with different age groups use social media and how it impacts them. Lastly, I learned that social media has many cons and pros.
