Research Resources

When you're researching for class projects, or you're just curious about something, use these websites! The articles and books you'll find are written by experts, so you know the information you read will be correct.

Lafayette and DCPS Resources

Pebble Go by Scholastic is one of the best research tools for pre-K to 2nd grade. They have a large body of articles about animals, inventors, science, dinosaurs and more. This website is not as comprehensive as an encyclopedia, but it does a wonderful job presenting information at a reading level that's appropriate for early readers.

Pebble Go Next by Scholastic is a great research tools for 3rd through 5th grade. They have a large body of articles that will be useful for social studies and science projects. This website is not as comprehensive as an encyclopedia, but it's a really wonderful, easy-to-use resource!

Our school's collection of ebooks includes titles that were purchased to help with research projects. eBooks can be accessed through our card catalog. You will need to log in with your Clever username and password.

Sora

Access nonfiction ebooks, audiobooks and magazines by logging into Sora! You can access Sora through Clever or by going here. The setup code is DCPSDC. You'll have to add libraries yourself. I've made a video tutorial to get you started, and a more thorough walkthrough video.

Epic!

Epic! is a collection of ebooks, both fiction and nonfiction, including favorites from National Geographic, picture books and graphic novels. If your teacher has signed up your class for free access, you can sign in with your class code. Unfortunately, Epic is not fully free after school or during the summer.

DC Public Library Resources

DC Public Library provides a lot of amazing, trustworthy resources for students conducting research. Some websites require you to log in using your DC Public Library or DC One card. Take advantage of these! They've sorted their databases by topic on their website. These are the ones that are best for elementary school students.

Britannica is one of the best English-language encyclopedias, and its school edition is truly excellent. You can log into Britannica through Clever; no library card needed! Make this your starting point for research every time! Britannica School Edition is available in three levels: elementary, middle and high school. If you are looking for more information about a topic, you'll want to choose a higher level. If you're finding the reading level difficult, have Britannica read the article to you.

Britannica has a citation tool to help you give credit and respect copyright. Use it!

Britannica is also available in Spanish.

Gale in Context Elementary is a research website for younger students. You can browse it by subject or search for a topic. You can find encyclopedia articles, images, videos and other resources on almost any topic. If you need more than basic information on a topic, you'll do better with Britannica, Pebble Go or Research in Context.

Research in Context is a great website. With one search, you can find encyclopedia articles, images, videos and other resources on almost any topic. The website is created for middle school students, so the reading level will be higher. No login required!

True Flix is a library of non-fiction eBooks. Each book is paired with a video! Many of the topics students research at Lafayette are covered in one of these ebooks!

Science Flix is a great place to start any research you're doing for science! It has videos and articles created by experts for students. It also give you a list of reliable websites to visit next, making your job much easier!

eLibrary is great for in-depth research. It's harder to use than Britannica, because it's a database instead of an encyclopedia. Searching it will give you lots of articles, but some of the search results won't be what you want. Browsing by Research Topics can give you better results and the resources that you need.

Montgomery County Public Library Resources

Did you know that DC residents can get library cards for free from Montgomery County Public Library (MCPL)? There are two library branches convenient to Chevy Chase! If you go shopping or dining in Bethesda, Connie Morella Library is close to Giant (7400 Arlington Road). Chevy Chase Library is up Connecticut Avenue, beside the Fire Department (8005 Connecticut Avenue). Ask your family if you may apply for a library card online!

World Book Online is a great encyclopedia! Use this for all of your basic research. A MCPL library card is required to access this database.
