Picture books of all genres can be used to teach a variety of necessary content, skills, and reading strategies. Picture books are a format of text that can help lay the foundation for new concepts, enhance vocabulary acquisition, and aid reading fluency/comprehension through the modeling that takes place during a read aloud. Picture books are usually written far beyond the reading ability of the intended audience therefore, they are meant to be read aloud. As students transition from learning to read and begin to read to learn, these books can be read independently for pleasure and practice!
