Ideas
1.
My first idea is to vlog a concert and have a bit of my own input/small interview. This will be my solid idea unless I don't end up doing it or make it possible. The band I'd be seeing is Pierce The Veil and I've been listening to them for years now and they are one of my favourite bands. I could base this video around how much they mean to me, how the concert is and also it would be my first time going to a concert alone so I could also talk about my experience and how it isn't as bad as you think doing stuff alone. The pros of this are that it will be very easy to get footage and the cons are that the quality may not be the best but I do want to make sure its great.
These vlogs are similar to what I'd go for. They include them getting ready but I definitely wouldn't try film that whole process. I found a solo vlog too since that is what I'd be doing. I like how casual these are and they don't seem like professional recordings which is what I'd try go for.
Pros - It's simple and easy, it's doable and I have things to talk about. The band means a lot to me so it would be representing something I love. It would be nice to edit in premiere pro since I might just do some colour adjusting etc.
Cons - Unsure if the quality will be awful.
2.
Secondly, I could do a small video about gaming that includes my sister for the interview and then some clips of gaming. I could base this on how gaming is actually a good thing and does have benefits as well as downsides but I want to focus on the positive part of it. Gaming has been a hobby of mine since I was younger so it would make a good topic to film about if my first idea doesn't go through. The pros of this is that I am already aware of what I could talk about, the cons are I'm unsure about how much footage or clips I could get that are interesting or decent.
This video has a professional setting. It has interviews and small clips of people talking about the topic of benefits of gaming. I know that I could add in small clips of me playing a game/sorting out a puzzle to give an example of how some things can be beneficial for your brain. The interviews could be me asking people about their views.
Pros - Knowledgeable on the topic, I have people who could speak about this, it is accessible since I can do filming at home and at college.
Cons - I'd have to find a few people to interview, it could take more time than needed.
3.
Lastly, a small vlog about cats and what they do in their daily life. I'd be using my cat, Merlin. This idea is really simple and I don't think it would be a long video. I have some comedic ideas for this one. An example would be filming the cat as if I were interviewing him and he just doesn't reply. This video would be very unpredictable and in the first place I'm unsure of what I could do since my cat is a living thing and I can't control what I want him to do or make him do something.
This video is very comedic and that's what I've taken from it. I see a few ideas in here that I could incorporate into my own work. My cat is an indoor cat, he has never been outside and I could base my video around him venturing outdoors for the first time with me. I could then have an interview with him (he won't speak back.)
Pros - This can be done in 1-2 days, I own a cat (and a few more), it's based at home.
Cons - I may not get the footage I want, it's unpredictable what the cats would do that day, it could be boring.
Shots from Trailers
Jurassic World 1
This trailer has a few shots worth mentioning. It does have a wide variety and I think their extreme long shots are the best ones since it shows off how big sections of the park are. I have the Mosasaurus one as an example below, it's so cool. I think this trailer tries to focus on the visuals since this was a very new park and the start of a new Jurassic sequel so they wanted to show off with more longer shots.
I would class this shot as an extreme wide shot, you can't see much detail and it is focusing on a key part of the park.
This shot is a closeup, you can quite clearly see the detail of the amber and the bug inside. I don't think this impacts the story at all, but it a nice visual.
I would say this is a long shot, you can see detail, but it still feels quite far. The people are also in view.
Creep
This movie is based around found footage vlogging. It involves a lot of close ups even during the film to create the intimacy around how weird the main character is. This movie also includes other shots that I focused on since they don't appear as often.
This shot would be seen as a long shot, it focuses on the environment around you and shows the whole person. This scene is creepy and the shot is very obviously trying to seem that way.
This shot is a medium shot, it comes from the waist up and has two people in the shot. You can see clearly they're having a conversation.
This shot follows the rule of thirds, you can see the open empty space to the side while the guy only fills a small portion of the grid. Since it's horror, I believe the shot was meant to seem tense.
Reflective Journal - 22nd Sept
Today I planned out some of my ideas and also learned about different filming shots. I set out to achieve 3 rough ideas, I have not chosen one yet but I aim to achieve that on a further day this week. I was confident in finding different shots within my trailers today and I did. I understand how different shots work, and the impact they have on the filming and output. I have not had any barriers today other than my idea generation being hard to think about since I was unsure what to do.
Changing/Officialising My Idea
I wasn't sure on any of mine but I had a new one that seems really easy to execute. My Mum and Sister are paranormal nerds, so I decided that I could interview them on this topic. I would ask about their experiences and what their beliefs are on the paranormal world. I plan to interview just two people, and I already know how I could frame it and get the right lighting. The motive behind this video would be that everyone believes in different things, and to make those beliefs they have had situations happen to make them believe that.
This video is very similar to what I'm doing since this person is interviewing their parent about the paranormal.
Rough Timeline
I want to start my video with an introduction to what is going to be discussed in the video and then move onto the interviews. There are a few clips of things I am going to attempt to add in. They are CCTV footage clips. I think this will be enough for my video since it is just about talking about experiences and then applying proof of some situations. I would like this video to give off slight creepy vibe.
This is my rough plan, I want to keep it this simple. I don't think the video will be extremely long which is good too. I like working with a rough plan and then leaving my filming up to how it goes, I can always play around during filming too and change stuff around when it comes to editing. My filming will follow the rule of thirds.
Questions I will ask:
When did you start believing?
What made you believe?
What is your scariest experience?
What makes you enjoy this topic? (paranormal)
Shots I will be doing:
My only shot will consist of rule of thirds since the main aspect of this. I may try to film a creepy long shot of something peeking around the door. The other footage will be CCTV clips that I have access to.
Reflective Journal - 24th Sept
Today I did more planning and came up with an official idea for my project. I originally didn't have this idea and I only came up with it while I was thinking about my project at home. This idea works really well for me and is easily accessible at any point to film. I am happy with my final idea and confident I will pull it off. I achieved my goal of planning out my idea fully and I'm confident about what I'm going to be doing when it comes to filming. The only barriers I had was worrying that my planning wasn't detailed enough but to me I feel it is enough to go off. Tomorrow I aim to finish the final part of my pre-production and then over the weekend I'm going to film ready for next week.
Reflective Journal - 25th Sept
I finished up all my planning today. There wasn't a lot to do other than finish up some of the stuff above and do my risk assessment. I achieved the goal of finishing my pre-production today and next week will be my post production. Over the weekend I will be filming so I'm going to take photos as I go along to put on my site to prove I did the production. I had no barriers today, everything went well. In the beyond I just aim to focus on my post production and make my final video look good. I want to see if I can colour gradient the clips of the interview to make it more ominous.
Production
I didn't get any production photos, but I did try setting up a camera for my recording, only to find out my SD card wasn't compatible and there was no video option on the camera. That set me back a bit because my phone wasn't my first choice since I knew the footage would come out wobbly and not very good. I did have to record on my phone. I tried to lean it on the chair so it didn't wobble as much but the framing was so bad and the camera did move a lot which was disappointing and not what I wanted. I set the scene by adding in battery candles that flickered. I chose that room too because it's very closed off and it was easy to make it dark in there.
Post-Production
I used the cutting tool to start off with my project. I had only got my interview clips by this point so that was the first step. They were both raw footage so it had me talking in it, random conversations and just mistakes so I made sure to cut those out and keep the footage I needed. In one clip of my sisters she made a mistake during a question that I couldn't cut out so there is an odd cut in one of the clips towards the end.
I started by importing all my clips I have so far into the software and then cutting them to the parts I need.
I used this to frame my videos to a way I liked and so it didn't look too far away.
I figured out how to layer my original audio over the top of my clip I added in. This helps me give context to what my actor is talking about.
I added in all the necessary clips for this, these are actual clips of something my actors went through.
I added an overlay and used the blend on the opacity to layer it over my video.
The overlay made my video look a lot darker and grainy, as if I had filmed it on an old camera. I like the way this looks
I also added in static audio underneath my original audio, this gives the background a little sound and also just makes the whole thing tense in my opinion. The sound of static to me is scary, and that's why I wanted to add it.
My framing when recording these interviews was really good at the start where I filmed my Mum. When it came to my sister I think the framing looks a lot worse and I wish I had got it the same but it can be hard when filming with a phone. It has been hard to get B-Roll since I have to wait till it's dark, and by time it is it's easy to forget I need to record at that time.
The static and noise looks really good with the CCTV footage, I did mute the original clips and I think the pure silence works a lot more.
For this CCTV clip, I made it louder so that you can actually hear the clear thud that they can hear. It was originally a lot quieter.
At the end of the video my actor does look at the camera for a split second so I tried to block this out by having the video fade to black.
You can see in my folder I had quite a few clips prepared for this project. I focused a lot on the interview.
I only managed to get a little bit of b-roll. I would have aimed for more if there was more time on this project.
This is the whole sequence. I'm happy with how it came out. I did a lot of copy and pasting for audio and overlay since the videos weren't long enough.
I am at the end of my post-production now. I believe that I have edited everything to the best I can with what I got. I was going to try shorten the interview a little but when I tried it was messing with the timeline too much and it was hard to try fix without messing up other stuff.
Reflective Journal - For the whole week
I started the week off by not having my footage yet since I didn't have the time, I spent the day doing more shot planning which I still need to upload onto my site but I forgot my iPad. I aimed to achieve a better understanding of what I wanted to add in my project, even if I didn't get this recorded, the planning and ideas were there. There were no barriers.
On Tuesday, I had my clips ready so I just uploaded them and did a little editing before I started on workshops that day, from here I aimed to achieve completing my video by Thursday. I had no barriers that day, I achieved uploading the videos into premiere and actually having something to show.
On Wednesday, I planned that day to do some visual editing and audio editing. My plan was to make the video noisy and grainy with an overlay I got on pexels. I achieved that, my video looks a lot darker and scarier due to that. The other plan was to make my audio static, I did this by finding a suitable one on freesound. This filled the silence I had, and personally I like that it creates tension and has an eerie vibe to it. The only barriers I had was trying to make sure the background static audio was at a good level and not too loud over the base audio. I did manage to make this all sound good.
Today is Thursday, I have completed my project by adding my two b-roll clips I got. I made them look like found footage or just hand held footage. I do wish I had got more b-roll for my video, but it was hard to get since I had to wait till it was decently dark outside. I'm happy with what I achieved in this time though. I did have a plan to do distorting of faces but I think that could've taken some time, but in future projects maybe I could include this feature.
