What is Primary Research?
Primary research is where you carry out your own research. You could get the information for primary research by holding surveys and getting people to give you this information freshly and have someone's own opinion. There can be a few strengths to primary research as you get the information accurately and up to date since it isn't old data collected from a while ago. The information you receive from it as well will be original and opinionated. Primary research can be limited though, collecting the data could be time consuming for some people and may require resources you don't have access to. Some information you get may be heavily biased and not what you're looking for in the moment. This data can be useful in situations like when you need a specific piece of information. I would use this for my research, I have used a survey in a previous project to get my own data from other people.
What is Secondary Research?
Secondary research is when other people have carried out the research for you, it has the same techniques as primary research but it isn't you that has collected the data. The strengths to this research is that it is quick and easy, you could use a quick google search or open a book to obtain the information needed for what you're doing. The accuracy for this information is subjective, but a lot of the time you can find easy accurate answers. Secondary research has limitations such as the information you're looking for is out dated, meaning that in present day that piece of info needed could've been changed. It is also very easy to get misled by doing this research depending on what you find. You may use secondary research as a starting point for what you're doing as it's easy and then you can go on to doing other forms of research. This research was also be my default since your go to would be the internet or a book.
What is Qualitative Data?
Qualitative data is where you cannot put the information into numeral data. You get this information from observing or having experiences. After you put down your findings, you go through and analyse it to form some sort of conclusion to your data. Qualitative data allows you to go in-depth which can help you expand your data. This way of getting data means it can be very detailed and useful as well. Getting this data can be very time consuming, sometimes the research can be simple and not enough to form a conclusion too. You would use this data to get a conclusion for answering questions, come to an understanding or formulate hypothesis.
What is Quantitative Data?
Quantitative data is where you gather the information in numbers, so percentages and averages for example. The strengths for this can be that the data you have collected is easy to read, accurate and you are able to compare and think about it. This type of data may be too simple at times for what you're looking for. It doesn't necessarily capture anything that could be crucial unless you're just looking for numbers. Lastly for limitations, the results can be biased and time consuming. This type of research is used when you want a simple way to conclude your research if you are looking to compare results, it is also used for statistics and analysis. I do not think I'd use this in research unless I was aiming for a simple answer ratio.
The Internet
The internet is the easiest way to access information, you get a quick answer that is normally up to date. There are quite a few strengths to the internet such as it's fast, you get easy answers, the information is right in front of you, there are tons of resources online to look at and it is very accessible. Sometimes the internet isn't as good as you think though, some of the information you find could be out dated or it could be fake or changed. It isn't necessarily reliable at times. Using the internet is common and everyone does it for quick answers. I typically would use this as default for my research.
Books
Books are very useful for finding what you need as the information you find is factual and true. Typically books are written by people who are trusted and they will likely be checked over to make sure nothing is false. Although they might not always have the up to date information since some books you look at could be from a very long time ago. There are a few limitations to books such as the fact that the book you're looking for might not be available or even have the information you need anyway. You would use a book when needing to do secondary research as the research has already been gathered for you.
Magazines
Magazines are similar to books, except they contain up to date information while also having out dated information in older magazines since they sometimes will sell those. You find that these can be very opinionated since magazines have a wide variety of opinions from people so this could be used in Qualitative research. The downside to magazines is that there can be so much stuff in them so you don't know if you'll find anything specific to what you want.
Misinformation
Misinformation is where someone or you spreads information that is incorrect but you did not know it was incorrect. This can be an easy mistake as sometimes when researching you could find some information that is wrong but you think is right since you have no way of knowing. An example could be is if someone told a student was informed it was non uniform day tomorrow but tomorrow was the wrong date for that but the other person didn't mean to make that mistake.
Disinformation
Disinformation is where you get purposely told information that is incorrect. People will sometimes spread false info intentionally. Normally this happens when someone wants to mislead people so they create fake news. An example of this is where someone could create a fake AI image of a sequel to a movie you enjoy and post it around knowing it isn't real and want to get a reaction and you are deceived.
Confirmation Bias
This is where people tend to interpret information based on their own beliefs and don't pay attention to the other info that could prove to be useful. People will typically focus on the stuff that only applies to their current belief and knowledge. An example of this is where anti vaccine people will see a bunch of negative information about it and take that as their beliefs but when they see something positive they choose not to pay attention because it is not within their beliefs.
Ulterior Motives
An ulterior motive is where someone has a hidden agenda or secret reason behind their actions. Typically this involves negative connotations. You do not know someone's true intentions and it is different from what they originally told you. An example of this is if a company tells you they make their product from recycled plastic but they actually don't and they are using this false advertisement to get a audience and profit.
Overgeneralisation
Overgeneralisation is where someone will assume something about a thing and then apply it to every single one of those things even if it isn't true. They are giving someone or something a stereotype that may not be true. For example someone may not like a certain cat breed so they apply the fact they hate that breed to every cat ever.
Correlation vs Causation
Correlation tends to look at how two things may be linked but they do not impact each other in a way where the other causes the other thing. Causation focuses on things that cause other things to happen.
Example - Lack of phone storage causes your phone to freeze or your phone may not work properly, the correlation here is the fact that the lack of phone storage makes your phone freeze so it correlates with not working because they typically are seen as the same thing by most people.
Reflective Journal - 10th Sept
We did research into different types of research that could help with our future research when doing different projects. I set out to achieve an understanding of all of these definitions and think about how I could incorporate it into my work. I found that some of the definitions were hard to understand at times and I tried to figure out the most simple way to explain it for myself which I achieved. I managed to get every one written down in my own words. My goals will be to try use these methods of research in future units, they will be a lot of help.
3D Software
Blender - Blender is a free 3D modelling software that allows you to freely make whatever you want. This software is popular since it doesn't cost money. It runs on a wide amount of devices and is easy accessible. People who use this will be into animating 3D models, game design, creating characters, 3D printing etc. It has a lot of features and isn't too hard to use for what it is. Blender is industry standard.
ZBrush - ZBrush is one of the most used 3D modelling software, big game companies like Epic Games will use them for their character design since it is very high detail. It is mainly used for modelling things to get a high quality outcome. The software is insanely technical and has a lot of features to it which makes it overwhelming but also makes for a really well done software. A downside of this is that there is a subscription plan for this and you have to pay to access really good benefits. ZBrush is industry standard.
Autodesk - This software is a multinational software and is used widely in things like architecture, engineering, modelling and draft structures which means this software is used by designers. It has been used for very big projects, for example Tesla and the One World Trade Center. They use Autodesk Revit for the 3D modelling and it supports intense model planning, management and construction before they physically start on the project. This software is a lot more technical and is based for companies. This software is industry standard.

Today I did research into three different 3D software. My goals were to find three and give a brief explanation on them. I already knew about two and then I had to do research to find another, this let me look at different 3D modelling software and just explore what others were out there just by browsing. It is interesting to look into them. I like that I managed to keep my paragraphs simple and easy to read instead of just putting down everything I saw while researching. I aim to keep doing this and making my work quality over quantity. I achieved my goal of keeping them brief and I got three software down.
Item
This is the item I want to model in blender, it's a really simple dragon egg made out of pins with a lot of texture and different colouring to it. I would like to change it up a bit in colour and make it more of a dirty gold.
I have an idea to make this item more advanced, I would like to attempt to add a wyrm dragon wrapped around the egg. Wyrms are not that difficult to map out and create, they're a very simple dragon which is why I thought of it.
This egg is based off of Drogon's egg in Game of Thrones.
Reference Images
The shape of this dragon's body reminded me of how I want to shape mine, the gold is also a really nice colour.
The design here is really simple which is what I should be considering for my model. It's also very flowy in this image which makes it look visibly nice to look at.
The body on this parade chinese dragon inspires me because it's slim and also the scales look similar to the pattern I want to do.
I love the colouring on this dragon, my platte feels very close to this which is what I am going for.
Here I took inspiration from the tail and face. I love how these dragons look and the way they have flowy features, it seems like shaping it in blender would be really nice.
My reference idea here is based off a chinese traditional dragon. I aim to keep my design simple so it isn't too difficult to create in blender. I want to keep the scales large and easy to do as well, if I made them all small and detailed then I'd have a hard time actually detailing it.
I do not want to add in legs to my dragon, you can see in the references that they have legs but I'm more leaning to keeping it to a wyrm. This idea could change.
This is a rough colour palette for my dragon, I previously mentioned above that I'd like to make my dragon egg a dirty gold and the same rough looking texture as my reference image.
I took inspiration from chinese traditional dragons, and ones they make for parades.
I may tone down the vibrancy and makes the colours more dull when I come to colouring.
Photoreal Car Model
This is a realistic model of a car, it is meant to represent that exactly as it is, looks real and is a car model. The style of this feels very professional as if you would find this in some company files for their next model car. This model is straightforward and I believe that to be the meaning of this style. It is useful because the style of photoreal car models look clean and simple. It is very clear what it is representing. They're very easy on the eyes and you can see clearly what's going on. Cons of these models are the fact that it does look boring, the style is something you see daily in actual cars. Personally I do think these can end up looking really cool but the process of this seems insane.
Abstract Model
Abstract is represented as funky and creative, it shows a creative mind of someone even by being simplistic. What is being represented here is clearly a creative pattern that has come to mind. The style here clearly has a fun motive, with any abstract art you can make whatever comes to mind using funky shapes etc. It is useful because it allows you to have your own ideas and it isn't just one solid idea. You find with abstract art is that it's flexible as well so you can do whatever you like. Cons of abstract is that it can be very plain and boring sometimes or people won't interpret it the way you want. I am a fan of abstract art when it doesn't look boring like the image next to this, the ones below feel much more nicer and can represent something.
Stylized Character
A stylized character can represent anything you want, you can incorporate what you want and give them unique features and characteristics. Making a stylized character can mean that they can be interpreted in any way you want and in many different ways. The whole process is creative freedom. It is useful to have this because stylized characters can be very fun and wacky and just look more visually appealing. Cons of this is that the art isn't realistic and it involves uniqueness of your own will. Some people are not into this type of style and might think it to be weird. I love characters like this, I prefer it much more to realism.
Reflective Journal - 15th Sept
Today I planned out my blender model idea and talked about different modelling forms later on. I set out to achieve completing this fully and get a strong grasp of what I would like to do when I come to making my model. I did achieve my goal for today, I'm really pleased with my planning and it is a little ambitious but I would like to try get the hang of blender so I wanted to try challenge myself to get better during this project. I did not have any barriers today, everything felt good and I did all my tasks easily. Next time I want to develop my idea more and create a strong drawing plan as I would like to digitally draw it myself in my free time. I also came to an understanding today of different forms of modelling, and how each one can represent different things to how you personally interpret it.
Blender Modelling
I started off with this pre-made egg shape which I used as a base to help me wrap the dragon round.
I accidentally made a cube I added into this playing around with the controls.
I started to try wrap the dragon around to get a base shape.
I tried to make it look more complicated by manipulating the faces and edges.
I deleted my previous wrap around and started again because I didn't like the way it was.
Here I started to struggle with the shape.
Reflective Journal - 17th Sept
Today I started on my blender modelling. I wanted to achieve at least a base idea but I'm finding that blender is super difficult as someone who hasn't used it before. I did manage to somewhat achieve this goal with a bit of guidance. I do think I may scrap the dragon idea and maybe work on it again in the future if I have free time. My barriers were the fact that I'm new to blender and don't know much about what's going on in the program, this is something I'd like to work on. Tomorrow I aim to achieve something that looks decent as a model.
I started yet again on the body because I didn't like the other.
I tried to make it wrap around the egg like my reference and then changed it so I could try stand it up on its head.
I kept the shape and you can see the head I made and horns more clearly.
I was starting to struggle with blender at this point and I didn't know where to go from here. I do find this program really difficult.
This is a more clearer view in edit mode of all the shapes.
Here I smoothed out the shapes and this is the result I got, I don't think it looks awful but it could for sure be better.
I tried sculpting but I was finding it hard with all the settings and controls.
I liked how square this was, it looked like a dragon and it seemed decent but I knew I wanted to make the model more round.
I pressed something and I accidentally did this to the body.
After the fail with the body I deleted it and decided to just focus on the head. I also made the egg shiny.
I got better with sculpting and I made the horns into this. I started feeling a lot better about my model.
I began adding simple and small details like a nose. I used cubes and then sculpted them to be smooth.
After a nose I added in a tounge so the mouth looked a lot better. You can also tell that the dragon head is a lot smoother now.
The model felt off without eyes so I added some in as a last face detail.
The eyes got coloured red and I used the metallic setting to make them shiny like that.
And finally in my last bit of time with this project I added in side horns. This gave it more of a dragon look.
This is how far I got, I'm happy with my result and I'd like to hopefully get better at this program. I could've done a lot better but I found that the software was difficult to grasp without help.
