Main Ideas
Poultry is Kentucky’s #1 agricultural commodity and food commodity.
The poultry group consists of chickens, turkeys, ostriches, emus, pigeons, geese, ducks, and quail.
Poultry is produced for both meat and eggs; although, larger birds (turkey and geese) are difficult to raise for egg production due to size and frequency of laying. It is more economical to produce chicken eggs
Eggs are also used for medicinal purposes, such as the flu vaccine.
