Oha!
Game Jam: Sustainable Foods
Created by Archie, Tobias, Kian and Kyle
Introduction
The first game jam was all about sustainable foods, We had to create this in a group of people and come up with an idea based of the theme. We had to make sure we included a target audience, design for the game, the functionality part of the game and make sure it was a fun, creative and engaging game to teach people about sustainable foods.
Our Idea
The initial idea that we came up with was a 2d side scroller/ simulation style of game, just like Cooking Mama. We made it so that the player would run a restaurant that their Grandfather used to own and there aim would be to go out and explore the wilderness to collect ingredients to help create meals in this restaurant to bring in customers and earn money. The player would start out with basic tools such as a pan and a spatula which would allow the player to have somewhere to start off. Later in the game, after collecting some ingredients and earning some money they can then upgrade to better equipment such as pots and microwaves.
My role
For this game jam i was in charge of the level design and the looks to the game. I had to make sure we had a set plan for what this game was gonna look like and what kind of style it was going to be. I had researched into other games similar to our idea so that i could get a bigger picture.
The Experience
My whole experience as a team, i think went really well. The team put an idea together and come up with some great initial ideas. They even managed to get a well organized PowerPoint sorted at the end of it all. The main strong points of this experience was that i had a well organized team, they came up with lots of ideas and generated a great overall game about sustainable foods. Some points i feel like could be stronger was the communication. I feel like we could've communicated a lot more wether it was over text or if we had little meetings at college to get a better understandings of who was doing what. At the end of it all we managed to get a great idea and we all had our own individual roles so it all worked out well.
