Moving onto the 5th project i wanted to create something simple but still make it look good. An idea came to mind almost instantly when i was thinking of what i could do. The idea i had in mind was to model a lumberjack axe and have it stuck into a tree stump. When i knew what i wanted to go with, i started doing some research into lumberjack axe's and tree stumps. I needed to make sure i gather enough images of the same axe so i knew exactly what axe i was going to be making.

For the first stage of this task, i needed to gather some images up for my referencing. This was so i had a great idea of what i wanted to model as well as showing my effort of researching into these models. Here is a small mood board of both the tree stump and the axe. This was a great idea to work on, so that i could have different angles of each prop and so that i know full well what details need to go into these models.
Modelling
After gathering up some reference images i decided to get started on the axe model first. I took a reference image into Maya so that i could trace out a very rough shape of the axe. With the blocking in place i then moved onto smoothing the shape out and re adjusting points to get the right look i wanted. After i did all of that i was pretty much ready to put this model into blender and start texturing it. Before i did that i wanted to make sure i got the tree stump modelled so then i could texture both models together in blender.
The tree stump was a little bit more complicated as they can be very organic looking shapes. I took another reference image and put that into Maya so then i could trace over the image to get a basic looking shape. With the basic shape to it, i started moving points and adding little details to the model until i was happy. The details were adding things like cuts throughout the log and insetting the top face to give the outer ring look.Â
The axe was broke down into two seperate models. The head and the handle. This would make it easier to model and not cause any issues with the topology. The head of the axe was pretty easy to model but required more time than the handle. I used my skill of tracing over an image in the background to get the rough shape of these models and after i got that shape i then bevelled the edges to give it a smoother look.
For the handle it was a matter of doing the same thing. The only problem i had to do was to delete some extra faces that would not be shown. This meant that i had to create some swift loops in order to delete the right faces. As shown on the image, the green outlined object shows that it is cut off before it goes through the head of the axe. This is done to limit faces for if it goes into a game or just any other project. This is so that it causes less frame issues in the long run as it is best to use as less faces as possible when creating a model and putting it into a project. I have started doing this with many models and that's to get me into that habbit of making things less performance heavy i can.
Moving on, i worked on the tree stump. The was a hard model to create as it was complex. This model required a lot of time and skill to create as it needed some sculpting and reforming. This shape is broke down into two models so that way when it comes to texturing later on i can give the outside a different texture to the inside. To create the slice in the log i had to delete some faces and then extrude inwards so then it would create that depth. This way it creates that effect of the log being hit by the axe. The sculpting part is not really a noticable part of the procedure but i think it gave the shape that little extra bumpy look to it. I used it to soften the edges up a little bit and to bump the outer side out a little bit too.
Shown on the left is the final render to the two models i created. Overall i am happy with the model however there are some things i would change to it. Them things would be to fix the grain of the wood material both on the axe handle and the log as they really dont flow like the real things. Another thing i would change is the log itself. Although you can tell what it is i felt like it wasn't the best. I think The whole shape needs to be more odd than even and symmetrical in a way and i think it needs to have roots coming out from the bottom of it to show the effect of it still in the ground.
