As the very first model i really wanted to gain some skills and really get into the flow of creating consistant models so here i created the M16. This model turned out greater than i thought it would. I had two aims for this model which was to keep it low poly but also keep it accurate to the real gun. This consisted of me creating small parts to get as much detail as i could. This model took me around 2 hours split two ways, texturing and modelling.
References:
The first step to creating this model was to gather a bunch of reference images in many different angles to help me get a greater image of the weapon. I decided to create a little mood board to help me vision the gun in different ways and look at the little details that i didn't see existed.
Video Production
Moving onto the next step, i worked on creating the gun with basic shapes, this is so i could then get ready to working on the details later on. The gun was broken down into many different pieces as show in the video on the right which really helped me get the whole shape of the gun and accurately represent the real weapon. This portion of the process of making the gun took me around 1 hour to model.
Detail Pieces
The next and the final stage i worked on was reshaping the whole gun to get the details it needed to be complete. This next process took me around 1 hour to complete to finish off the modelling stage to this weapon. The pieces i created/ reshaped below included, reshaping the center piece to have a smoother flow, creating room for a sight to be in place, adding the back sight, adding the front sight and more.

Stage 1:
The first step i worked on was making room for back sight to sit in. this would allow the player to aim down the top of the gun making it easier to aim. This was an easy process of insetting the top face and dragging it down to create a slope.
Stage 2:
The next step, was to create the room for the front sight. This was the same process as the rear sight which was just a matter of insetting the top faces and dragging them down to create the gap and room for the sight.

Stage 3:
Moving onto the third stage, i worked on creating the rear sight to be able to aim with the gun. This was a simple process as it only required one cylinder. I grabbed a cylinder, inset the top and bottom faces and deleted them which allowed me to create the whole right through the middle. After bridging the inner faces, i inset two on the bottom to extrude up for the sight marker to stick up. I then extruded two of the outer ones to act as a stand.
Stage 4:
The forth stage was to re work on the back carrying handle. On the rear end of the object, i reshaped it to be more accurate to the gun rather than it being one flat solid shape. I then added two extra pieces to the side of it.

Stage 5:
The final stage of the re-work process, was working on the body of the gun where the bullets get placed. This model started out with a basic cylinder sat on top of a cube but i changed it to have a more smooth approach and a nice outline. The rear end sits nicely with the cylinder with it being a snug fit.
