The next Model on the list and a project favourite of mine was this low poly forest scene that i created in Maya. This scene turned out fabulous and i am very proud of it. This model was an almost instant idea when coming across some references i found. The idea of this scene was to keep it simple, clean and crisp which i did a great job at doing.
References:
Finding references for the idea I had in mind was not easy. I knew that I wanted this model to fit in as a square as a section of land has been cut out perfectly. The process of finding what I wanted came around when looking online at some 3D scene references to which I came across these four beautiful models which helped branch out my idea.
Tutorials:
The first step to any project is actually modelling it, which is no surprise but the first model i worked on, was the trees. The reasoning behind this is because i wanted a specific type but in a low poly style. To start this model i looked at a tutorial that i found instantly on YouTube by the name of Digitial Dreambox . This style was the perfect type i was looking for and it was really simple to do.
Modelling: (Tree)
After watching the tutorial and getting a better understanding of how to model this type of tree, I started to work on it myself. Following along with the video, I gathered the objects together and forming them to get the right shape and readjusting points when necessary. After creating one tree I then duplicated it multiple times but rotating and angling each one differently so they weren't repetitive.
Modelling: (Land)
With the tree out of the way i decided to work on the terrain. The land was a simple process with basic primitives such as a cube. To get this land looking great I first worked on getting the shape by resizing it to make the land thinner and wider. The next part was to focus on where I want the river to flow and in this case I wanted it running through the middle. To get that idea down I swift looped along the cube in a zig zag pattern so that I can break the land and the river up. With the swift loops in place i selected the squares where the land would be and extruded them up, which i then would bevel the land that goes down into the river so that it has a nice slope from the river bed to the land.
Modelling: (Log)
Next on the list was the logs. The logs were a simple process and easy to do. The first part of this model required a cylinder and turning the segments down to around 9 to keep that low poly look that i wanted. The next step was to select the front face, inset it and then extrude it inwards to create that front over hang on the log. The next step was to inset the inner face multiple time to create sections for the little grooves in the log for that texture. The final stage was mirroring this object onto the other side so that it is the same on the other end of the log.
Inset and extrude front face.
Inset and extrude inner face.
Mirror object for symmetry.
Modelling: (Rock)
The final model was the rocks. This process was another easy one to come across as this required a cube which i beveled on the top for more verts which would allow me to mess more with the shape. The points around the cube would then be moved anywhere i want them to be to give different shapes for each different rock. This process was repeated to each rock do give unique shapes to all of them.
Final Renders
With all models in place, I textured each model individually with the materials on Maya as these models didn't require textures as I was keeping it very simple and as low poly as I could. With that being said the final renders for this project are below with a final render video i created for the model.
