Sub-Machine Gun - UMP45 (Weapon 3)
The third gun I moved onto was the SMG. This gun was fun to make with its different attachments compared to the other gun. This gun had some issues that I will come to along the way. Below is a video of the beginning phase of modelling the gun to the final stages of adding the attachments and texturing. Just like the ones above, I broke this gun down into different parts to make the process easier. This gun didn't include a high poly gun as the details were subtle enough to keep them on the low poly.Â
Modelling and Texturing
UV Unwrapping
As the video above didn't showcase the UV process, I have decided to showcase the final look of the UV's below on both the UV map and the gun. I decided not to include the process as the two guns above show the same process of how I did them on this gun too. To add everything neatly onto the UV map I used the shortcut controls, CTRL + L to align them all into the UV square to make sure they use as much as the square as possible.
How did it go?
At this point, I was understanding the process of UV unwrapping the guns, I still had some issues of perfecting them but I was understanding everything. In terms of producing this model to a good enough standard, I think it went very successfully as I've had the experience in modelling two guns at this point, however I did have some slight issues when I was modelling. Seeing as this was a more complex model I had to create some holes for the main body of the gun, unlike the other two which meant this was knew for me. Overall, everything else went a lot better including the texturing and UV unwrapping as this was a better experience this time around.
Any Problems?
A major problem to point out with this model was the process of trying to create the hole in the main body of this gun as I encountered an issue trying to fill in the inside of the object. This had to be done as the player would be able to see inside the gun which meant I would need some textures inside to show that the gun has thickness to it. The first problem I had was actually connecting up the inside and having the faces shown without messing up my topology.
Solutions..?
My first attempt to solving this problem was trying to extrude out the edges from the front of the barrel all the way down into the middle of the gun, which I soon realized I would be blocking the holes on either side of the gun, stopping the hole reason for there to be any holes. My second attempt of this problem was to select the outer edges where the holes were made on each side of the gun and have them bridge up across the middle of the gun, but I soon realized that this would create a tunnel between both holes on each side of the gun which was not what I was looking for. I attempted one final solution which was creating a lip inside of the gun at each end to act as the thickness of the gun to which I then extruded further into the gun which I then connected both sides up into the middle of the gun. This method worked successfully which I then carried it on further down the gun to fill out the back and finished off the inside.
