For this project, I had to take a social media survey to see how addicted I am to Social Media. I also had read into social media research and give my opinion on Social Media.
After taking the "Am I Addicted to Social Media " Quiz, my results were,
You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling?Â
I thought, I had a better grasp on my usage of social media, before taking the quiz limiting it to Youtube and Facebook. Though as I was taking the quiz I realized, that I do tend to spend a lot of my time on Youtube, watching videos. I am going to try to limit my usage of Youtube as a recreational activity to only a few hours a week, unless I need it to look up a tutorial or for school purposes.
An interesting fact I found in an article on Pew Research Center website, was that a many teens are constantly on social media sites like Youtube or Tiktok. I chose this statistic in particular as it was just a recent study on 13-17 year olds social media usage, a generation that I will be working with in the near future, having similar or worse addictions to Youtube and other social media.
In my opinion, social media's impact has been like a snowball. When it was first introduced to people, very few people used it, but as technology advance and people were able to do more with it, like being able to carry a phone that has access to social media and being able to post images and videos, it started to grab more people's attention. Now, almost everybody that has some form of connection to the internet, has a social media. And it has taken us over so much so that many people I know, friends and family included, can't even go through one conversation without browsing social media. I think social media just has too much of an influence over us, and is negatively affecting our interactions with others.
During this project, I learned of how big the addiction to social media is. I thought that by limiting the amount of social media I had to YouTube and Facebook, that I would be fine. Though, through the survey I learned that I am very addicted to YouTube using it more often than not for recreation. And that people younger than me, are more addicted than I thought to social media, with some using it constantly throughout the day.
