I stay up to date on issues and I am most rewarded when I see my peers succeed
•I remain up to date on government of Canada priorities and issues both within my department and across other departments. This allows me to increase opportunities to become involved in new projects, to provide feedback on my colleague's work, and to connect people working on similar issues (when appropriate).
• I stay up to date on data and research issues which allowed me to peer review over 10 Statistics Canada publications on the criminal justice system to assess factual presentations, identify opportunities for clarification, and commend strong analysis.
•I seek out opportunities for challenge and of interest, including an opportunity to co-published a qualitative study assessing factors that lead Indigenous people to plead guilty in the criminal justice system. This work enhances the current understanding of the issues driving over-representation of Indigenous people in Canada.
Evidence matters in today's world and I can help make sense of best practices, complex data, and bodies of research
•Reviewed, synthesized, and applied policy authorities, foresight work, government of Canada/mandate letter priorities, NGO reports, and academic research to work with five teams in supporting a redesign of a Grants and Contribution program.
•I translate general work priorities to identify concrete opportunities, which has allowed me to identify research topics, produce fact sheets, and complete research reports synthesizing complex data sources, historical trends, and emerging issues for wide audiences.
•Created an opportunity to co-published a qualitative study assessing factors that lead Indigenous people to plead guilty in the criminal justice system to enhance the current understanding over-representation of Indigenous people in custody in Canada
I add to the typical nine to five by championing workplace initiatives including the workplace charitable campaign and wellness activities
•I acknowledge the role and celebrate the value of others in large and small team activities.
• I have taken on leadership and teammate roles in various workplace initiatives such as:
• CCDPHE Wellness Committee (2020-present) & Justice Canada, Policy Sector, Wellness Ambassador (2019);
•Justice Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign – Auction event lead (2018 & 2019); and
•Keeping work healthy working group – Policy Integration and Coordination Section, Justice Canada, Co-Chair, November 2016 to November 2019.
I have planned, participated in, and provided feedback on consultation and engagement projects in government and in the community
•I communicate ideas, views and concerns effectively and respectfully, and promote the same in exchanges of information, ideas, and options when working with internal and external stakeholders.
•I engaged with external stakeholders and colleagues to support a departmental initiative to create, explain, and assess programming options to deliver legal advice for victims of workplace sexual harassment.
•I engaged others in the Government of Canada to learn about current approaches, best practices, priorities, and policies in support of engagement activities and options for a new DG in chronic disease prevention and health equity.
• Worked on a future forecasting project which involved asking over 30 experts to assess what social issues may impact Justice Canada in the next 10 to 15 years. More recently, I managed a contract for future foresight analysis of the chronic disease prevention space in the next 20 years.
I communicate complex ideas for wide audiences and work with a team to craft messaging that is useful for experts and the general public
•Prepared QP notes, talking points, opposition day speeches, and Q and A's on family law, criminal law, COVID-19, and criminal justice system trends.
•I deliver engaging and informative presentations tailored to my audience on decision points, option analysis, research findings, and best practices. My audience has included: management; a panel of Mexican delegates; conference delegates; other government departments; and university classrooms.
•I communicate ideas, views and concerns effectively and respectfully, and actively seek feedback from others whether in a classroom, conference, boardroom, or one-on-one setting .
I have the skills and tools to help projects pursue their goals, stay on track, and make a difference
•When taking on new projects, solving new problems, or reprioritizing my day-to-day activities, I embrace change and look for opportunities to develop, grow, learn, help others, and challenge myself.
•Managed student contractors working on a research study across Canada and a cooperative education student in a doctoral program. For the research study, this work included: training contractors; accepting deliverables; explaining court procedures; and seeking approvals from senior officials among the jurisdictions. When managing a cooperative education student, this work involved: creating networking opportunities; identifying and pursuing learning objectives; finding challenging and meaningful tasks; and regularly providing and receiving feedback.
•I identify warning signs and spot problems so that I can propose solutions and/or alert superiors as needed.
