Materials

Supplies needed

*Since this is not a professional art class, students are not obligated to purchase the specific brands of the materials listed below.

Graphite Pencils

Try to purchase pencils in more shades than your standard No. 2 pencil. When utilizing pencils throughout the grade scale, one will be able to achieve deeper values in their art.

Eraser

Any eraser would work but kneaded erasers are best for detailing and the Prismacolor Magic Rub eraser are good for graphite drawing in general.

Fabric

Seemingly, a strange request, getting some fabric or paper is essential to sketching. When working on a piece, it is best to lay some kind of material under one's hand to prevent smudging.

Sketchbook

The favored sketchbook brand is Strathmore. If students would like to use their sketchbook for more media beyond graphite, it would be best to purchase a sketchbook with mixed media surfaces.

Online Portfolio

This will be provided for you through a shared link.

Color Pencils

The Marco Renoir Fine Art colored pencils are similar to Prismacolors but are a little more affordable.

Acrylic Paint

Pack of at least 12 acrylic paint tubes will be required. I recommend Liquitex Basics or Artist Loft paints. If student already owns acrylics, the student may continue to use the paints in their possession.

Watercolor

Generally, I would recommend tube set watercolors over cake watercolors. This is due to a number of reasons including the quality and utility. Specifically, I use the Winsor & Newton brand that you can find at Michael's. Click here for my suggestion of a 10 tube set or click here for my recommendation of a 20 tube set.

Canvas

High grade canvases are not required and both canvas board and stretched canvas will be sufficient. For beginners, I would recommend a stretched canvas. Click here for a 5 pack 16" x 20" canvases under the brand Artist Loft. Buying in bulk is more economic, however, students may also purchase individual canvases.
