"A culture of discipline is not a principle of business,
it is a principle of greatness."
- Jim Collins, Turning the Flywheel
Your people must adhere to your Core Values that create the culture, and you must be disciplined in finding the right people and managing them to live the Core Values. Core Values must reflect the owner / leader's values, or else they are not authentic. Thus, there can be as many different statements of core value as there are people. And as long as they are consistently applied, the organization will create great trust with all stakeholders. Create your Core Values, talk the talk and walk the walk.
Jim Collins "wrote the books" on great cultures and the great companies they make. His premise, which we proved at XIKAR, is that companies whose people and processes adhere to their Core Values, can become great, because they create Trust
No value or ethics statements are alike - they must reflect you and your team's commitment to your customer. They must be authentic so that you can live them. Refer to these to get started, or use your own.
Translate your Core Values into action through Why, How and What. Why do you exist? How does that look? act? What does that mean to your stakeholders (employees, customers, investors)?
Written in 1998, XIKAR's core values included Responsibility, Integrity, Curiosity, Honesty and Ambition. Our Why, How and What were the authentic, natural outcome of those values.
It is better to have no core values than to announce them and then not follow them. A company that violates its ethics is labeled one with "bad culture".
...because Core Values guide the way companies act when there is no clear path to follow.
Create a set of Core Values and a statement of Why, How and What BEFORE you start on your Strategic Focus, so that the Core Values drive a natural outcome in your strategy, related to who you are and why you are in business. Then build a culture of people around those core values to execute the strategy that aligns with it. Your Core Values will help you do this – by attracting the people who share them and filtering out those who do not.
