Living in Kagoshima, the ocean is almost always pretty close by. Luckily for me, I absolutely love the sea! It's so close to Kaikan, I walk there almost every day. It's my favorite thing to walk to the 7-11 close to the ocean, buy some snacks, and then eat them while enjoying the view and sounds of the ocean.

Some of my friends enjoy the ocean too, so we find stuff to do near the water. This weekend I went with my friend Yohei to a nearby ocean spot to go look for obsidian rocks. We timed it perfectly so we would arrive at low tide, and rocks that are usually hidden under the water would become visible. It was a great success, as we found tons of really cool looking obsidian pieces and brought them home. Not only that, we spent a long time looking at all the ocean life that was revealed at low tide. We found snails, crabs, mudskippers, and animals we had never seen before and didn't know the name of. Next time, I'm planning to learn how to fish!

I found this creature under a rock. Is it some type of seashell?
I put it in the water and it turns out it was a sea anenome!!

Soccer is one of my favorite things in the entire world. I love to watch it, play it, and talk about it with friends and family. So far in Kagoshima I've found no shortage of ways to enjoy my favorite sport!
One of the ways I like to express myself the best is through the clothes and fashion I wear in daily life. I'm not good at matching colors or coming up with trendy outfits, but I love expressing myself through clothing. So, most days you'll find me wearing a soccer uniform showing love for teams or players I like. Finding rare and unique soccer uniforms is my favorite thing to do when shopping online, but they're really expensive, so it's not often I get to actually buy them. So I was completely shocked when I wandered into a shop full of them at Tenmonkan. They had famous teams and players, but also rare lesser known teams that I had never seen even online. I was absolutely overjoyed and spent a bunch of time looking at all the shirts they had. The most surprising thing about it was that not only were these really rare retro jerseys, their prices were really cheap! I ended up buying two.
The jersey of a Turkish team I found. When I showed my Turkish friends at, they were so happy and remarked at how cheap it was.
This one isn't particularly rare, but the price is really amazing, and it's really surprising to see one outside of Mexico.
Even if you really like soccer, there's a good chance you have never heard of this team. They're not very well known, I couldn't believe they had this at tenmonkan!
A rare jersey I found which has the name of my favorite player of all time! He's not very popular anymore so I was shocked
Bonus: I found a shirt of my favorite soccer manga at the nearby mall. I liked it so much I bought two.
Directly across the street from the dorms is Shiranami Stadium, where the local team, Kagoshima United plays. They compete in J3, but are currently one of the best teams in the league fighting for promotion to J2. Even though J3 is the lowest league, the fans are super passionate! They start gathering together, cheering, waving flags, and singing songs hours before the match even starts. They have multiple supporter songs and it is so much fun to chant with everyone. One thing that struck me when I arrived was just how many people were wearing the team`s home uniform! I often go to basketball games in the US, and maybe about half the fans there will be wearing merch or jerseys. But at Kagoshima united matches, the vast majority of people are wearing jerseys, and its awesome to see. I really wish my favorite basketball team had that type of support. The chairs arent super comfortable at the stadium because they don`t have a back, but it was pretty easy to find seats with a good view. We ended up winning the match 3-1.
Even before the match, theres lots of fun to be had. There are tons of food stands and trucks where you can get food from local shops. This time, I chose Birria Tacos. Its a little different to birria tacos in america, but it was so delicous. Of course, I had to stop by the store and buy one of their jerseys. After having so much fun at the match, I couldn't believe how close it was to the international dorms. It's literally right across the street, so I'll definitely be going back more often.
Every week, I play soccer too! There's a soccer group on campus that plays at the field every Sunday evening at the sports ground. The group consists of around half international students and half Japanese students. It's not a circle or club or anything, it's just for people who love soccer to get together and play every week. It's super casual and anyone is welcome to join. I'm really glad I joined because it was a great way to make friends and feel at home. My soccer skills and my Japanese conversational skills improve so I look forward to it every week.
This is where we play. Usually around 10-15 people show up every week. We can play a match on our own, but if there are other people there, we love asking them if they wanna combine and make a big full size match! It's not super visible today, but I love the view of Sakurajima while playing.
Since the rainy season has arrived, it was raining this week. We didn't let that stop us though, we decided to play in the gym! We usually play til sunset, but because we were indoors today, we could play past dark. We played for hours and now I'm super sore.
After our match, we put all the goals and equipment back, pack up our stuff and head home.
After the matches, we're super sore and tired, so sometimes we'll go to the onsen! It's the best after a long, tiring day, and there's a few really close to the dorms, so I go pretty often. There is one closer to the dorms, but the one I always go to is called Nishikiyu. It's open really late, until 1am so it's the one I prefer.
The first time I went with my friends, I wasn't really sure what I was in for. I had heard of onsens, but I didn't know much of the details. My friends invited me and I happily obliged, I was totally down for a new experience. We walked over, paid the 420 yen entrance fee, and went into the locker room. All was going great until I realized I had to take off ALL my clothes. And my only option was to just be completely 100% exposed! I didn't like the thought, so I considered going home, but I had already paid so I gathered my confidence and decided to tough it out! After a while I got used to it, and it was totally worth going.
After we get out, we always get coffee or ice cream then head home.
Now I go around 2-3 times per week, and I've gotten to know the owner and some of the regulars pretty well! I always talk to him for a little bit before I enter. If I'm lucky, on my way out he'll give me some left behind items that have been sitting around for too long like shampoo or conditioner. Since I often come by together with my friends, last time I went, he gave me a whole basket of items and told me to give them out to my friends!
On the second floor, there's even a piano, and apparently there will be a little piano recital for kids soon.
In Conclusion,
This was my first time living outside of the US, so it was a big adventure for me. I think I grew as a person, all the while having tons of fun. I made many friends and tried all kinds of new things. I can't wait to come back to Kagoshima in the future!!
