A group of cat friends on Sakurajima. The island seems to be full of them. They appear to be well looked after, as the cats are all spayed/ neutered to control the population, and bowls of food and water are left out by the locals. 

桜島でうとうとしているのら猫友達のグループ。この島にはこのような猫がいっぱいいるらしいです。頭数管理のために猫たちは全部去勢されていて、現地の人はえさや水をあげているそうです。のら猫たちはよく世話をされているようです。

Something I was super excited to experience in Japan are fluffy pancakes. My older brother had them when he went to Tokyo and I had been craving them ever since I saw the photos. We don’t have anything like this in Marin, but there used to be something similar at a local cafe that ended up closing down when I was young. It was a favorite treat of mine, so I was happy to be able to experience a similar taste here in Kagoshima. 

日本に来る前にめっちゃ期待していたことはふわふわスフレパンケーキを食べることです。兄が東京に行った時、このふわふわパンケーキを食べて写真を私に送ったので、羨ましいなと思っていました。私のふるさとではこんなデザートはないけど、昔、ローカルカフェで似てるものがあって私はとても好きでした。でも、子供の時その店は閉店してしまいました。一番好きなお菓子だったから、鹿児島市で似てる味を経験出来て嬉しかったです。

This was taken on my way back to Kaikan from school. Even just my everyday commute to and from Kadai is something I really cherish here. In my town, we have a lot of hills and highways. The sidewalks are narrow, and they aren't everywhere. Since the streets aren't ideal for bikers or pedestrians, I'm used to driving everywhere. But Kagoshima city is flat, and the roads seem to be catered to bikers and pedestrians. I love biking through the neighborhoods, and am always stopping to capture the beautiful harmony of the traditional Japanese architecture and peaceful skies. 

この写真は学校から会館に帰った時撮りました。毎日の通学や通勤も大切に思っています。私の地元では、たくさんの坂と高速道路があります。歩道が狭いし、ないところもあります。アメリカの道路は自転車に乗る人や歩行者にとって理想的ではないから、いつも車を使います。でも鹿児島市は平らで、道路は自転車に乗る人や歩行者向けに整備されているようです。私は近所を自転車を乗って走ることが好きで、美しい景色の写真を撮るためにいつも立ち止まります。

Everyday is different, but recently I've been visiting shrines after class when the weather is nice. It's rainy season right now (early July), and most of the days have been cloudy, so I like to take advantage of the sunny days and explore the city on my bike. This is Tatebe Shrine, which is one of my favorites in Kagoshima City. It's on the side of a mountain and overlooks the city. 

日によって違うけど、最近は晴天の日に授業の後で神社に行っています。今は梅雨だから（七月初旬）、たいていは曇が多く、たまに日差しのある日に自転車で鹿児島市内を探検するのは楽しいです。この写真は建部神社(Takebe jinja)で、私のお気に入りの場所の一つです。山のそばにあって、鹿児島市全体の景色が見えます。

Part of my weekly schedule is going to my part-time job. I was lucky enough to be introduced by my good friend Miyu, who is a student at Kagoshima University. We met in an online exchange program through school a few years before I came to Kagoshima. We work at a small cheesecake shop at Amu Plaza, along with our friend Tika who is also an exchange student. Through speaking with coworkers and customers, I'm able to practice my Japanese. Even though it it's simple, this has been the best job I've ever had.

私は毎週バイトに行きます。私の鹿大生の親友みゆさんがバイトを紹介してくれました。みゆさんとは、大学のオンラインプログラムを通じて数年前、私が鹿児島に行く前に会いました。私たちは今、アミュプラザで留学生の友達のティカさんと一緒に小さなチーズケーキ店で働いています。友達と一緒に働いて、同僚やお客さんと話しながら日本語を練習出来ます。 簡単なバイトですが、このバイトは今までで最高の仕事でした。 

My experience studying abroad this semester in Kagoshima would not have been what it was if not for the incredible people that spent it with me. I came to this city knowing only one person who lives here, and my biggest fear was not being able to make any friends, but right away I ended up feeling surrounded by love. I know I will look back on this time as a rare experience where I lived close to a bunch of my friends, got to see them everyday, and travel together regularly. Thank you to everyone who made my first semester at Kadai memorable.

今学期の留学経験は素敵な人々と過ごした素晴らしいものでした。鹿児島市に来た時、知っている人は一人だけでした。一番の恐れは友達を作れないことでしたが、すぐに友情につつまれていると感じました。 留学が終わった後、たくさんの友達と毎日一緒に時間を過ごしたことや、よく一緒に旅行したラッキーな経験を思い出すと思います。 みなさん、思い出ありがとうございます！
