This weekly drawing course is designed for beginners and for advanced practitioners who are looking for a systematic refreshment of their skills. We take a unique and holistic approach to developping your drawing skills, taking into consideration the interconnectedness of body, mind, and soul.
Why draw? I like to consider drawing the skeleton or grammar of visual art. It is a precise way to decipher what we see. Sketching, drawing's sibling, is a quick application of that. Drawing asks us to really understand the logic of what we see. Drawing asks us to develop a calm hand, a precise gaze, and a logical understanding of shapes and shades.
We will start by a gentle full-body warm-up exercise, followed by a concentration meditation where we practice the skill of guiding our hand to do what our minds want. We then come to the main part of the lesson:
Practicing the depiction of particular objects, beings, and settings. As we do so, we will dive into the different techniques of applying pencil to paper (hatching, lines, smudging, creating surfaces).
Everything we see can be drawn onto paper using different approaches, and I will teach you all of them so you can understand which approach fits your individuality best (grid, eye measurement, measuring with hand and pencil, becoming what you see).
We will close by sharing our learnings.
Note: It matters what we draw and how we feel in doing so. I will ask you to carefully observe your emotional reaction to what you are seeing and then drawing. It helps to like what you see. It can be motivating or distracting to love what you see. Drawing something you do not enjoy can show you new avenues in how to overcome barriers and gain acceptance (not only in drawing, but also in life). You can draw with your mind – or you can let yourself be drawn in, and let your hands be guided by the essence of what you see. I mention this because if you want to develop a practice of drawing that motivates you to keep drawing, we need to consider the interplay of action and (emotional) reaction.
What we will draw: Here is the matter-of-fact list of drawing skills we will cover.
Perspective (one point, two point, three point)
3D geometrical shapes
Placing of shadow and light
Depicting different textures
Still lives
Approaches to drawing landscapes
Approaches to urban sketching
Introduction to drawing faces
Introduction to drawing plants
Introduction to drawing human bodies
Introduction to drawing animals
What to bring to your first session:
Clothes that allow you to move freely (don't shy away from showing up in sports gear!)
A pencil
In the first session, I will introduce you to our drawing materials. Thereupon, you can choose whether you want to get them yourself, or whether you would like to purchase them from me as a practical package at cost price.

Bringt gerne Eure eigenen Zeichenmaterialien: Bleistifte, Spitzer, Radiergummi, Papier.
(EN) This course is aimed at beginners as well as experienced life drawing artists.
During a session, the models, which change weekly, will take short and long poses. This allows your eye to train in recognising movement and form, while also giving you enough time to study the model more closely.
In addition, each week will include a short excursion into different aspects of figurative drawing – be it anatomical issues, lighting, or the structure of the human figure.
Participants can join, drop out, or pause at any time: the individual sessions do not build on one another.
The course is led by Thorsten Gehrmann, who will be happy to support you with his many years of experience as a drawing teacher!
The number of participants is limited.
Please bring your own drawing materials: pencils, sharpeners, erasers, paper.
Booking: €22 per session. Sessions can be booked in series or individually by emailing mail@kunstraum-heartspace.de, stating the desired dates.
