Overview
Welcome to the Thermo-Fluid Dynamics & Optimisation Laboratory (TFDO Lab) at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, led by Dr. Prashant Kumar. The laboratory focuses on the modelling, simulation, and optimisation of complex thermo-fluid systems using advanced computational and experimental methods. Research activities emphasise computational fluid dynamics (CFD), vortex dynamics, immersed boundary methods, fluid–structure interaction, and heat transfer. The lab also explores topology optimisation and advanced design strategies for improving the performance of thermal systems. A key goal is to develop energy-efficient refrigeration, cooling, and thermal management technologies. By integrating physics-based modelling with high-performance computing, the TFDO Lab aims to address both fundamental scientific challenges and practical engineering problems in modern energy and thermal systems.
