CHPL is a repository of the major German Newspapers of the Greater Cincinnati area. The German newspapers acted as Daily Publications for much of the German-speaking population of the Greater Cincinnati area, running editorial articles, global news, marriage notices, birth notices, obituaries, job postings, advertisements, and more.
The newspapers held by the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library are as follows:
The Cincinnati Volksblatt/Tägliches Cincinnatier Volksblatt (1846 to 1918)
Published weekly until switching to daily publications in 1854
The Cincinnati Volksfreund (1850 to 1908)
Published daily with a special Sunday weekly publication running from 1853 to 1895
The Cincinnati Freie Presse (1874 to 1920)
Published daily
The Cincinnati Zeitung/Unsere Zeitung (1887 to 1901)
Published weekly
Please note that all publications are in the German language with no English translations.
CHPL is in the process of working with Newspaper Archive to get microform holdings of local German newspapers scanned to permit digital access. Please note that this is an ongoing process, and the digital holdings for all newspapers are subject to change. Linked below are the physical holdings for each newspaper (please note some microform may be unavailable due to being offsite to allow for scanning).
The database can be accessed by going to CHPL.org, selecting the Services tab, and clicking the Magazines and Newspaper Articles link listed under Research Support (second column).
From there, you can scroll down to Newspaper Archive, which is listed second from the bottom under the Featured section of the holdings.
After selecting the database, it should launch the website. Please know it may ask you to enter your library card and PIN to proceed to the website.
Once on the Newspaper Archives website, you can click on Publications at the top of the page and set the location to Cincinnati, OH, US.
After that, you can search the Newspaper Names section for the German Newspaper you are searching, which will bring you to our holdings, where you can browse by date.
