CHPL is a repository for the Cincinnati Herald, the largest and longest-running African American Newspaper in the Greater Cincinnati area. The Herald began publication in 1955 and continues to be published every Wednesday, focusing on national and local news specific to Black communities as well as how events in the news impact Black communities. Current issues on the Cincinnati Herald's Website can be accessed by selecting the button below.
Please note that holdings from 1955 to 1975 can be accessed digitally through Newspaper Archive. Due to copyright issues, issues of the Cincinnati Herald from 1975 through the present can be accessed through microform and print format at the Downtown Location of the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library.
The database can be accessed by going to CHPL.org, selecting the Services tab, and clicking the Magazines and Newspaper Articles link listed under Research Support (second column).
From there, you can scroll down to Newspaper Archive, which is listed second from the bottom under the Featured section of the holdings.
After selecting the database, it should launch the website. Please know it may ask you to enter your library card and PIN to proceed to the website.
Once on the Newspaper Archives website, you can click on Publications at the top of the page and set the location to Cincinnati, OH, US.
After that, you can search the Newspaper Names section for "Cincinnati Herald", which will bring you to our holdings where you can browse by date.
