The Beginning of Pláticas

History

July 2019- Ariana Barrera (graduated in Spring 2021) reached out to Dr. Sanjuana Rodriguez expressing an interest in creating a group that would focus on supporting Latinx students in BCOE.   The first planning meeting was held in August 2019. We requested a list of current Latinx students that were currently enrolled in a program in the Bagwell College of Education, and we received a list of approximately 150 students.

2019-2020

We held our first meeting on November 7, 2019. There were 9 students in attendance at the initial meeting. At this meeting, students shared their vision for the student group. One of the suggestions that students shared was their desire to be able to talk to current classroom teachers.

During the 2019-2020 school year, we invited 4 teachers (All KSU graduates) to come and to talk with teacher candidates about what it was like to work in the field. We began to use a protocol called “Pláticas Con Maestras” (informal conversations with teachers). We provided snacks during meetings. We also invited an academic advisor from ESS to come and talk to teacher candidates & a person from the scholarships office to come and talk to the students.  Worked with RRPG Program for Hispanic and Latino Students.
