MATA is the local teachers' union of School District #69 (Qualicum). We are located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The district includes 13 schools and enrolls about 4,000 students. MATA currently has about 280 FTE members.
MATA provides its members with representation, professional development opportunities, and information on collective agreements.
Advocacy and Representation
Negotiates collective agreements: As a union, MATA negotiates with the School District on behalf of its members to secure favorable working conditions, salaries, and benefits.
Provides representation: The association offers assistance and guidance to its members regarding grievances and other work-related issues.
Holds regular meetings: MATA hosts monthly meetings for its executive committee and general membership to address important matters concerning teachers and education in the district.
Professional Develoopment
Sponsors conference attendance: MATA sponsors attendance for teachers in their first five years of teaching, as well as teacher candidates and teachers-teaching-on-call (TTOCs), to attend conferences such as the British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF) New Teachers Conference.
Arranges information sessions: The association organizes information sessions on topics relevant to its members, such as Employment Insurance (EI) for TTOCs.
Encourages participation: MATA encourages its members to take advantage of professional development opportunities, including sponsoring attendance at conferences.
