The Sisters of the Krokopeplos is a monastic order, as well as an association of small commune-abbeys called "Circles". It is composed primarily of old lady (and gent and other) pagan nuns, living, practicing and caring with and for each other.
The Sisterhood is a monastic order, but not a cloistered one. We are a teaching order, and our work is out in the world, with our Friends and the public at large. People who are not Sisters are always welcome to study, worship, and learn with the Sisterhood of the Krokopeplos, and to wear the krokopeplos during ritual and communion with the Goddess of the Krokopeplos if they so choose. We call such people Friends of the Krokopeplos. Most Circles have public events where all are welcome.
There are two types of Sisters of the Krokopeplos. Sarabaites feel a calling to serve, but are not ready to make a permanent commitment to a monastic Circle, and many have no desire to do so in this lifetime. There is no expectation that Sarabaites "graduate" to being a Sworn Sister; most do not. Sarabaites vow to:
make Liminality, Liberation, and Learning as a primary focuses in their own lives.
work to create Liminality, Liberation, and Learning for others.
make regular communion with the Goddess of the Krokopeplos
regularly and publically teach what they have learned while wearing the krokopeplos.
regularly gather with their Sisters in spiritual companionship.
when veiled, serve as an oracle of the Goddess of the Krokopeplos, answering questions asked in the name of Python Drakaina.
Those who wish to pledge themselves as Sarabaite Sisters of the Krokopeplos should be:
Of any sex or gender.
At least 33 years of age.
Of sound mind.
In relationship with the Goddess of the Krokopeplos.
Firm in their desire to learn, teach, and know Liminality, Liberation, and Learning.
Sworn Sisters of the Krokopeplos undertake a sacred oaths to devote the rest of their mortal life to teaching and learning as monastics. Most Sworn Sisters have retired from full time secular work. In addition to the vows of the Sarabaites, Sworn Sisters vow to:
not marry or bear children. Sworn Sisters may have grown children, and on rare occasions, married couples may swear together, but they may need to abrogate their marriage vows if those vows prioritize their spouse over other commitments. "Sisters before misters." is the rule of the order.
divest themselves of private assets, and to live and hold property communally in small abbey-communes called Circles. The logistics of this vow are determined by individual Circles. All finances are handled at the local level, between Circle-mates well known to each other, to avoid corruption.
spend the rest of their mortal life in service to the Goddess of the Krokopeplos, and to rejoice after their death among the accessible Ancestors as a Mother of the Krokopeplos.
Those who wish to swear themselves as Sworn Sisters of the Krokopeplos should:
Be at least 44 years old.
Have been a Sarabaite for at least 3 years, but longer is recommended.
Exceptions can be made for those near death.
Be unmarried and free of children below 23 years of age. (Why?). Occasionally, exceptions can be made for couples who wish to swear together, or for Circles to communally adopt children.
Committed to an unmarried, childfree old age of teaching & learning. (Why?)
Committed to continuing after death as a Mother of the Krokopeplos. (What?)
Accepted as a Sworn Sister by a Circle. While Sworn Sisters are not required to live in a Circle House, they are required to be affiliated with one. Circles have VERY broad authority to set their own "house rules", including the authority to grant dispensations to the rules above.
