The Kolob Canyon Review is a literary journal for the students, faculty, staff and alumni of Southern Utah University. I was one of the designers for Volume 30. As a designer, one of our tasks was to help narrow down the visual art submissions. There were a lot of entries and we had to narrow it down to about 50. After deciding that, it was time for us to start thinking of the theme of the book. After reading through all of the written submissions, we noticed a common theme through majority of them. Death. So we took that theme and rolled with it. One thing that I was assigned to do was the layout of all of the poetry entries. We were also tasked to create a number of images to be used as placeholders throughout the book. After we finished with the book, we were also able to create buttons, stickers and bookmarks that would be sold at the opening event for the book. In the end, the journal itself was a big success solely based on the theme we went with. A book theme around death had never been done before. This was created in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
