Negative sentences

Negative sentences

In Thai, negative sentences are very very easy, we can use ไม่ for absolutely everything. This however is not the same with English and is something you are going to have to learn.

Let's look at making NEGATIVE + VERB.

In the present tense there are 2 ways of making a negative verb. We can use either do not or does not. How do we know when to use each of them though?

If we are saying I, you, we, they then we can simply use don't (don't = do not):

  • I don't like chicken
  • you don't drink coffee
  • We don't play ROV
  • They don't study Chinese

If we are saying he she or it then it is slightly different. Instead we use doesn't (doesn't = does not):

  • He doesn't sing
  • She doesn't cook
  • It doesn't eat

So far so good.....

Next lets talk about using NEGATIVE + TO BE

It is relatively easy, we simply add not onto the end of the sentence.

  • I am not a girl
  • You are not a student
  • He is not tall
  • She is not smart
  • It is not hungry
  • We are not Chinese
  • They are not American

The verb "to be" does change based on the sentence's pronoun but overall it is relatively easy.

Finally

NEGATIVE + MODAL VERB (กริยาช่วย)

Be very careful with these verbs, although they are verbs they are different from normal verbs and follow the same rules as "to be", for example:

  • I can't (can not) read
  • you shouldn't (should not) play games
  • He mustn't (Must not) go to sleep
