Producing and consuming music in digital culture
← I listened to this and I can't stop laughing at the variations of it
Music is equivalent to my daily dose of caffeine, I cannot part with it as a frequent consumer. Even when I was younger, I would listen to the music from the television at home, my grandpa’s radio or at the shopping mall. I can never get bored of it, mostly…
My consumption of music includes the genres and languages that I have affinity with. It used to be limited due to the lack of a better digital device. During that time, I have gotten used to listening to Chinese songs on the radio from my grandpa’s radio and my school bus, or the church songs. After I got a phone in my Year 6, my taste of music grew and I discovered more of the music world. I got to explore anime songs, which were mostly Japanese, K-pop and English ones.
However, I can claim that I am in an echo-chamber because I would always repeat the song that I like. It was hard for me to adjust to other song genres and sometimes, the song that my friends introduced me to wasn't to my taste. There is one time where I repeatedly open a song for 4 days continuously on YouTube until my mom and aunt get sick of it. Even now, I would repeat a playlist that I compiled for days on a shuffle loop. Those songs also hummed in my mind throughout the day.
My addiction in music culture was triggered by the meaning and vibe of a song. Some songs can influence or reflect my mood of that time because I always love singing to it. One of the examples would be 'Jumping Into My World' by Lollipop * universe from Paradox Live. The song presents the will to grasp onto the true oneself by embracing individuality, and its vibe reminds me of hyperactive kids with happiness and no restrain. Another songs that I keep on repeating would be 'f*** getting better, I want to get worse' by MaeThePirate. The song lyrics are relatable to me as sometimes it’s hard to cope with the growth in mentally and emotionally. Both songs reflect my spirits and it was calming to listen to songs that I can have a connection with.
My current medium of listening to music would be YouTube Music, although I need to pay for a premium membership. This started because I couldn't find the songs that I wanted from Spotify and I was frustrated at that. I have stated the licensing issue of content that is limited in certain regions in my previous entry. Music content also faced the same problem in Spotify despite paying for the membership. It was understandable because it was Japanese songs from my favourite anime, but it was an unpleasant experience for me. Thus, I changed my music platform to YouTube Music and now can listen to unlimited songs that I can enjoy a lot.
