In his book, Kostas Ganias offers a shattering eyewitness account of the atrocities committed by communist guerrillas in the villages they occupied in Epiros during the Greek Civil War and the cruel hardships they subjected surviving villagers to, forcing them into Albania when they retreated in 1948 and then scattering them all over Eastern Europe. The searing experiences he relates were shared by countless others and are indisputable despite the relentless efforts of the left to deny or obfuscate them.

Book one events bring home in a first person sense of cruelty in historical humanity. It being a first hand account by someone I know and consider a great friend brings this ordeal to life and elicits emotions that I do not like to feel or show. The person we become is a mold of what we have been through. Thank you Charlie for sharing these most intimate and pain filled memories.

Hearing individual stories now, some 70 years later, highlights how very little is actually known about the Civil War.

The writer does not take sides of the Civil War but allows the reader to decide.

What a scary adventure to set off into the unknown in search for a better life situation and opportunity. It struck me odd that that some of the people you most counted on seemed to have failed/used you while others (strangers) were the most kind and giving. Charlie's work ethic, scrappiness and personal pride along with opportunity made him the successful person and family man he is today. Reading the book allowed me to pull back another layer into who Charlie why he is, who he is today. Charlie’s mother played crucial supportive and selfless role towards Charlie’s and siblings wellbeing. I do remember her but never knew just how much she had been through and how strong she had to be for the family. She was one GREAT person.
Again, Charlie “Thank you for sharing!”. As I told you in person, part of the reading made me cry ☹ (don’t tell anyone )
I hope the wring of these books serves as a catharsis as well as preserves history and your legacy! You have an amazing family and you are and always will be great friends!!!!
