It took decades of personal courage and strength to convince Kostas Ganias to even think of starting such an endeavor to write about the Pethomazoma. Although he had gathered information for many years, the formal writing took place from 2015-2017.
The experience was always in the back of Kosta’s mind, and he wanted it to stay there. For years, he would not talk about it, even with his family. He wanted that experience to be left untouched. The personal hardship in Greece, Albania, and Hungary, in an environment that almost cost him his life, left him with scars brought by the communist guerrillas along with the labor details, and the hungry punishments. Then, after all that, Kostas made the journey to America to find the American dream.
Kostas was born in Vavouri on December 4, 1942. After returning from Hungary, he immigrated to the United States in 1956, where he lived and attended schools in Worcester, Massachusetts.
In 1964, he was drafted in the U.S. army and served through 1966. In 1969, he attended Worcester State College and upon completion he also earned his master’s degree. Kostas taught at various schools in Worcester and retired after 30 years of service.
Kostas still lives in Worcester with his wife of 45 years, Katherine. They have three children. He visits Greece every year and spends most of his time in Sparta, but always goes up to Vavouri where everything started, to bring back old memories and visit his father’s grave. His favorite and best way to spend his time is with his grandchildren whom he adores so much!
Kostas is happy to connect with you!
