The philosophy of our charity and who we are
Yep, that’s Dianne and I way back when. There’s been a lot of water under the keel of that ship since Dianne and I dressed as a pirate and his lady at a costume ball. (Dianne is still my lady, but I am no longer a pirate ) There also has been a lot of water under the keel of our lives. In those days we traveled around quite a lot, we learned many things, and we made a special effort to meet the regular people whereever we went. One time, in a Third World country we were visiting, we visited a medical clinic, which was supported by one of the organizations we belonged to. Everyone who worked there was very proud of their little clinic and although the equipment was archaic by US standards, we saw what a difference it made in the lives of people who lived in that community, and what a difference can be made by giving to make peoples lives better.
But You don’t have to look to Third World countries to find people in need, tonight, right here in Austin, TX there are 7054 people experiencing homelessness, 3555 of them are without shelter, 1108 of them are children under 18, and 15% of the total figure are survivors of domestic violence. That is why we have chosen to support charities that address the basic needs of these people, not only here in Austin, but in other areas of the US.
People often ask themselves what can I do to mitigate all this sorrow in the world, and in my own community? Often they choose to answer this question by indecision and doing nothing. It is the easiest answer to kick the decision down the road, and certainly the most economical for them. Dianne and I believe by lighting one little candle of hope in someone’s life, it can be the wind under their wings that lifts them up, and can make a difference for them and be an example for others, to light a candle, and make this a brighter world.
We hope that when you look over what we are doing, it may inspire you to light a candle of hope too. We are not alone in this world, everyone we meet is a brother or sister, and all of us deserve to be happy and live life to realize life’s potential and fulfill their dreams, unencumbered by hunger and sorrow. Shortly, as we scale up to Foundation status, we will be asking you to join our team through your contributions of money, services, or ideas. It’s going to be a wonderful journey and we hope that you will choose to be part the adventure with us . We can guarantee that in your heart you will feel better by traveling along on our quest with us.
For now, Dianne and I have got you covered. Click on our blog top left to see what type of adventures we are currently having, and if you like, send us an email to tell us what you think. In the meantime, think about lighting that candle and if you do, your day will be bright, Your mood be light, And your heart be filled with delight!
We have both spent years working in the medical field, seeing firsthand many of the health and nutritional issues, effects of having too few resources, and the effects of homelessness that have had on people. We have spent many hours volunteering with various medical, youth, and community groups in the past.
We continue to participate in "boots on the ground" volunteer work, mostly with food pantries providing directly to the needy in the community, and outreach to the homeless. We feel strongly that supporting mostly smaller charities with cash grants from our funds will provide basic human services and is a cause worthy of our amassed funds. It is hard for many of these very dedicated smaller groups and individuals to secure funds to continue their mission because they don't know where to turn or have the means to obtain grants.
