Promotion Examinations

Note (1): What follows are the minimum requirements for consideration to be examined for promotion. Readiness is evaluated by the Chief Instructor in discussion with the Yudansha based on evidence of understanding Ukemi, Relaxation, Technique, and Etiquette related to the study of Kodokan Aikido (see "Important Principles", below). All examinations are performed at the discretion of the Chief Instructor.

Note (2): The recommended minimum is training 2x per week. Training consistently 2x to 3x per week each semester is roughly 30 - 40 training days respectively depending on gym closures.

Note (3): Examinations occur once per semester for 6th kyu and once per year for 5th through 1st kyu. If you feel you are comfortable with all the requirements (see the student handbook) and at least meet the minimum number of training days, you can submit an application:

Please submit your application at least one (1) month before the end of the semester (Spring semester for annual examinations).

Things to Remember

  • Only test at the level one feels comfortable, not the level at the edge of completion
  • Bowing should reflect one's composure and self assurance
  • Posture and facial expression should convey composure and being at ease
  • Always remain centered
  • Breathing patterns is extremely important in testing, endeavor to keep a natural rhythm when you breath
  • Maintain positive attitude and respect before and after testing
  • Utilize open mat time before and after class refining your skills on your own, with a partner where possible
  • It is important to remain calm even if struggling with a technique with a particular partner
  • Uke is also tested on how they respond to nage's technique, it is important to respond to the technique
  • Nage starts techniques with the left side; uke adapt to nage and the technique called
  • Good rolling and falling technique is very important
  • Uke should be sincere and committed in giving clear and strong attack at a level that nage can respond and complete the technique

Testing Procedure

Initial Bow-in for nage and uke:

  1. Shikko up to the examiners (usually three) who are administering the test
  2. Bow to Kamiza/O'Sensei
  3. Bow to Examiners
  4. Bow to each other

During Testing

  1. Perform each technique numerous times on both sides until examiners say stop
  2. Sit in seiza facing each other between techniques

Final Bow-out for nage and uke:

  1. Bow to each other
  2. Bow to examiners
  3. Bow to Kamiza/O'Sensei

Nage and uke will shikko back to their position in the line.
