By the way, such board games are so called "zero-sum" games. Checkers, Othello, Backgammon, Poker and the like. One wins the other loses. Play ten games, and there are a total of ten wins and ten losses. Or five draws, or any other combination. But, they all sum up to zero. Still they are fun. There is more to them than their sum. BTW. Have you heard about the recent book: The Sum of Us: : What Racism (or Caste) Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together? I added Caste, because, I have been reading the other wonderful book called: Caste: The Origins of our Discontents. But, that's some tangent... Let's go back to zero-sum games. There are also more realistic and non-zero sum games. The game known as the Prisoner's Dilemma—a subject long investigated by political scientists, followed by mathematical economists specializing in game theory, and subsequently by experts in biology and ethics [e.g., the delightful book titled Moral Calculations]—could perhaps be given a more fitting name: the "Compete or Cooperate?" dilemma, for it truly seeks to answer a very fundamental question. Veritasium ("atom of truth!"), one of my favorite YouTube channels, has also explained this concept beautifully in a video; the link can be found here. The first step toward resolving this dilemma within our own lives is to realize that the two prongs of this fork are not, in fact, entirely antithetical, and to approach both the game—and life in general—with this same mindset.
