Lice

Head lice will always be present in school (especially preschools and elementary schools). Head lice are unwanted but they do NOT cause disease. KMS follows the most current Center for Disease Control (CDC) and American Academy of Pediatric (AAP) research and recommendations for handling lice in the school setting. Lice treatment must be completed at home and we need YOU to help control lice.

Head Lice Information:

• Head lice move by crawling. The do NOT jump or fly.
• The greatest risk of spreading and getting head lice is from head-to-head contact.
• Routine head checks have not shown to be effective in the spread of head lice and are not done in school.
• It is recommended that parent check their child's head frequently (once a week) for head lice.
• Not everyone with head lice has itching. Itching does not usually start until 4-5 weeks after a head lice infestation. That is why frequent checks are recommended.
• Notes will NOT be sent home when a child in the classroom has head lice. This has not show to be effective in the spread of head lice and can be considered an invasion of the student's privacy.
• If you have any questions, suspect your child has head lice or you know your child has head lice please contact the health office.
