Mentor Evaluations

Who, What, When:

    • I was evaluated by UAMS PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency preceptors during my second Journal Club presentation.
    • The presentation was on March 28, 2018 and took place in G226 of the COPH (Rahn) building. There were seventeen total learners present. In attendance were eleven Clinical Specialists, two PGY-1 residents, and four management representatives present. These mentor attendees included:
      • Ashley Wilson, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP
      • Amanda Ferstl, PharmD, CACP
      • Leslie Kurczek, PharmD, BCPS
      • Jennifer Roberts, PD
      • Christi Quarles-Smith, PharmD
      • Sonda Lloyd, PharmD
      • Deb McFatridge, PharmD
      • Karen King, PharmD, BCNSP
      • Barbara Slatton, PharmD
      • Lindsay Coleman, PharmD
      • Katherine Lusardi, PharmD BCPS AQ-ID
      • Gavin Jones, PhD, PharmD, BCPS
      • Amy Hilliard, PharmD, BCPS
      • Justin Userry, PharmD
      • Mike Parr, PharmD

Evaluation Summaries:

    • The mentor evaluations were overwhelmingly positive. As I had previously taken feedback into consideration, the mentors were pleased with my pace, slide formatting, and topic choice.
    • Positive themes from the evaluations included enthusiasm for topic, concise and clear summary of articles, slide formatting, and graphic choice. The learners also enjoyed the learning activity as it enforced interaction and collaboration between one-another. This was a new technique for Journal Club presentations and they were surprisingly engaged.
    • Constructive suggestions for next Journal Club presentation included distilling down take home points in a summary prior to finishing the presentation. Additionally, one mentor listed my use of personally expressive adjectives I used throughout the presentation to describe my opinion on the topic. I used adjectives such as, "huge, great, a lot, very, etc." which create a relaxed and possibly less-credible presentation. As this topic also touched on defining work roles between "staff" and "specialists," I was encouraged to describe these roles more "artfully" as there were a few phrases that seemed harsh towards one group or the other.

Evaluation Form:

    • I addended this pre-made evaluation form to include prompts that address my specific teaching goals. I added the following lines to the evaluation template:
      • Draws connections for applicability to clinical practice at UAMS
      • Provides concise presentation
      • Provides resources for additional learning opportunities
      • Explains relevant topics clearly and logically

"I felt the group activity enhanced the lecture and made a normally quiet meeting much more interactive and productive."
