we often receive questions and inquiries from viewers and one came in a while back that was particularly intriguing to me first of all because it's a rather new human behavior and secondly because very little is known about it and I love research so I decided to dig my heels in and find out as much as I could about the subject and share it with you the question was simple is vaping safer than smoking cigarettes now first of all I want to point out we are not going to pull out a new rabbit out of an old hat both are bad I want to be clear about that both are bad but the simple answer through research is that yes baby may be less harmful for you than smoking cigarettes and I choose those words carefully it's not that vaping is healthier for you than smoking cigarettes but it may be less harmful for you than smoking cigarettes let's get into some of the details in just the last few years over 500 articles have been published on vaping now most of them are just about vaping very very few of them are direct comparisons on the health risks or benefits of vaping versus smoking cigarettes now e cigarettes are devices that produce an aerosol by heating a liquid containing various chemicals including nicotine flavorings and other additives users inhale the air assault including any additives into their lungs aerosols produced by e-cigarettes can contain harmful potentially very harmful chemicals such as heavy metals lead volatile organic compounds ultrafine particles potentially cancer-causing chemicals and other agents used for cleaning the device over 80 compounds are inhaled every time that you use.
AnD now let's compare that over 7,000 chemicals that are inhaled every time you may smoke a cigarette now there has been a recent epidemic of vaporing people or a cigarette users going to their doctor going to the emergency room because of lung disorders the onset of respiratory findings which might include non-productive cough chest pain shortness of breath appears to occur over several days to several weeks before the hospitalization and systemic findings might include fast heart rate fever chills fatigue GI distress diarrhea preceding the lung symptoms adult smokers who are attempting to quit should use evidence based smoking cessation treatments including counseling nicotine replacement and fda-approved medications those who need help quitting tobacco products including e-cigarettes should contact their medical provider tobacco smoking tobacco cigarette smoking is the primary cause of preventable cardiovascular deaths in the United States and tobacco use cessation has long been the focus of significant public health efforts according to the Surgeon General report from 2014 rates of smoking in the US have reached historic lows concomitant with this decline in tobacco cigarette smoking is the use of electronic cigarettes introduced in the US and about 2007 that has markedly increased especially among young people and that's where it's a big big concern for me youth is a major concern 3.1 million high school students in 2018 use e-cigarettes or vague and six 600,000 of them are of illegal age yes East cigarette use may be less harmful than tobacco use but it comes with its own set of risks and it has increased markedly remarkably from 700,000 users in 2012 to 3.2 users in 2018 the effects of e-cigarettes on long-term cardiovascular health are rather inconclusive but concerning.
However as reviewed here the effects on biomarkers may show increased cardiovascular risk with multiple small studies showing at least temporary increases in oxidative stress inflammation and vascular dysfunction platelet aggregation as well these effects are likely consistent with the properties of nicotine though the effects of the component other components of e-cigarette use emissions may also contribute to this now let's be clear it is e cigarette use is less carcinogenic than tobacco smoke tobacco smoke not only is associated with lung cancers but cancers to out the body again it's the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease in the United States and it worsens virtually every health condition that we're aware of the vapor of e-cigarette contains in comparison to tobacco smoke less harmful substances both qualitatively and quantitatively although the vapor of e-cigarette vapor is less harmful than tobacco smoke these cigarettes are not hazard free lifestyle products we know that tobacco smoke weakens the walls of the lungs so when we breathe in we get lots of air but there's little lung tissue so that means we're not actually delivering that air to the vital cells of our bodies again it's associated not only with lung cancer but multiple types of cancer through the body we know that e-cigarettes inflammation of the lungs think of it as just the lungs turning red another problem with a cigarette use is it's associated with a higher rate of illicit drug use because you can put other drugs in those vaporizing units ecigs achieved modest cessation rates with tobacco smoke along with behavioral counseling and intervention is still ongoing and studies are still ongoing there are very few direct comparable studies and it's hard to imagine that something is worse than smoking cigarettes and very likely these cigarettes are not as worse as smoking tobacco so the bottom line is this yes ecigs vaping may be less harmful for your health it may be less associated with cancers but we know it's associated with acute symptoms because of this recent epidemic and the recent epidemic may be due to the market increase in adulterated agents that you put in the vaporizers they may not be as pure as they need to be that may be one of the causes of the recent spike the epidemic of emergency room visits and individuals using e-cigarettes.
